Animated Shield - four questions

It doesn't touch on proficiency that I've seen. Although as a house rule, we made it so you had to be able to use a shield under normal circumstances to animate it. It does mess with the idea of an awakened dog using the shield, but also adds a touch of realism.

Yes I realize realism has no place in DnD, but sue me!

Ah! Good quote. I don't have SS.

Does it touch on the proficiency issue?

I don't really see the issue. really all the dog would suffer is the ACP, and if he used a animated buckler or small shield, he wouldn't have one. With a large shield, it would be a -1 to his attacks.

But I always saw the ACP due to the shield (or armor) getting in the way of movements, and if you're not trained to fight while weilding that type of shield or armor, you suffer that ACP to your attacks.

A dog, as you say, will never know how to fight while wearing a shield, but I don't see why someone would suffer the ACP while a animated shield follows them around (as long as they can speak the command word).
