Animated Shield Magical Item

How does this work??

Does the shield constantly float protecting the character or is there a time limit for it say something like animate object??
Also does the character have to be facing it to keep it activated or can it float behind him giving him cover on his back or above his head for example.
Also could you use it as a means of transport if the character isn't too heavy for example a halfling thief using an animated medium shield to cross a river???

Thx in advance

In 3.0 there is no tme limit. Rumour is that this changes in 3.5.

An Animated Shield provides an Armor (shield) Bonus, like a normal shield, not a cover bonus. If you want a cover bonus, check out the Dancing Shield from Sword and Fist.

And no, it's not designed for use as a transportation device. It's a shield.

Sorry wrongly worded about the cover, Imeant an AC bonus to your back only??

I was just thinking that something that floats and is big enough for a char to sit on then possibly it could be used. I would ssee it as a good use of the item in a campaign imo. But was just wondering on rules side of things

A shield, apart from a tower shield, gives an AC bonus against attacks from any direction.

This includes animated shields.

"There is no facing in 3E."

It's not an Unseen Servant or a Tenser's Floating Disk or a Telekinesis spell. It's a shield. It protects, it doesn't carry.

It can't follow instructions like "carry me across that river". It has an "On" (Protect me!) and an "Off" (Stop protecting me!).

It's like you can't tie a note to a Dancing Sword and tell it to go deliver it to your friend in the next room. It hits people or it doesn't. That's all.
