Anime for the Significant Other?

So... I'm engaged.

She's not a gamer, nor is there any chance of converting her.

However, we've recently watched some Anime together, and I think she might be somewhat amenable to becoming more involved in this particular interest of mine.

So... any suggestions? We've recently watched Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, and the Animatrix DVD.

Her interests include material culture, museums, the Food Network, HGTV and Art History (and cats).

Run with it! I'm expecting nothing less than life changing suggestions here (no pressure).

edit: She rather likes Buffy as well, come to think of it.

Try Inuyasha. I'm biased but I personally think it's a great little anime to watch together. Or buy the manga! :)

I would second Inuyasha. Just make sure you start at the beginning, and get her into it before she burns out on School Girl uniforms.

I have also had alot of luck getting non-anime fans hooked on Cowboy Bebop. It's structured like an American Film-Noir, which makes it easier for non-anime fans to relate to.

If she liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke you may want to try her on My Neighbor Totoro,Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service all by Hayao Miyazaki.

I very much enjoyed all of these except Castle in the Sky, and I generally do not like anime. (I was forced to watch My Neighbor Totoro, and have since gone and watched all of the others, great stuff!)

The Auld Grump, who's first experience with anime was Astro Boy and [i[Kimba[/i]...

My (now) wife watched Samurai X with me, and if she can stand a little blood-letting it will be a good movie for you both. I don't want to give away anything, but it was a good movie with some great character development and twists to the story.

Metropolis may be an ok anime to get, as it has some issues about humanity and where one of the main characters came from. Scenery shots are really good if you can get past the sorta cheesy character looks, but you can always just MST3K the movie if she doesn't like it.

Another good anime is Fruits Basket. This is a series about a jap. schoolgirl who becomes friends with a very strange familie. The familie is cursed, this leeds to some hilarious sceens. Lots of characters and romance/comedy, no blood.

And I second Cowboy Bebop, even if the name is stupid the series is awsome.

(These 2 are a bit more violent)
Other interresting series if her tastes run more into the likes of buffy is Hellsing.

Noir is more a modern day female assasin duo with a lot of mystery.

Just of the top of my head.

Basically, it comes down to figuring out what mainstream movies and shows she likes. Once you've got that figured out, you're quite likely to find anime that falls within those tastes, especially now that we're getting more diverse anime offerings in the west, including titles that are more female-friendly than the stereotypical sci-fi or hentai offerings that were the mainstay of the western market of years past.

On the Miyazaki list, don't forget 'Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind' either. (but make sure to stay away from the bad american adaptation "Warriors of the Wind")

I would also recommend Fushigi Yugi or if she's of the soap-opera-viewing persuasion Kimagure Orange Road.

Funny I never considered Inuyasha hentai based. :p :) But that's cool.

I second Noir. It's a great little piece. Another is Serial Experiments: Lain. It's twisted but fun.
