[Announcement} New Monster

Real world venomous snakes are reluctant to use their poison, even well fed specimens in captivity. I doubt my variant basilisks would be any different.

Pet snakes in the real world are not in telepathic communication with their owners, nor do they have above animal intelligence like familiars do.

True. Then again, it is a telepathic link, and not a Dominate.

At the same time, a cat doesn't stop being a cat simply because it is a familiar.

No, but that cat is now willing to go scouting, go into deep dark places, as well as get in danger, becasue it's a familiar, and it's 'for the good of the party'.

If the basilisk is being fed by it's master, then it has no real use for it's paralyzing attack other then defense. And if that defense means defending it's master, then why Not?

"Snappy, quick, look at him, or we're all dead!"

Neat idea. I don't have the rules in front of me, but there seem to be far more feats than its hit dice warrant, and the crit range of 16-20 seems to be completely unjustified. I'd greatly reduce its combat abilities, especially if it would rather run than fight.

Nice OGL/non-OGL layout, by the way.

Spells are supposed to be in italics... I've found a couple of typos...

What is the world coming to? Alas, poor Alan, I kinda knew him well...

;)

Actually, I like the beast for the most part, and while the majority of my questions were already brought up earlier in this thread, I'm still forced to wonder why anyone would ever desire to throw the CR system out the door.

Sure, it isn't perfect, but the majority of people that use it compared to those that don't... major alienation of some customers.

actually, i spent quite a few years working with most species of domestically kept herps and this is quite untrue.

there is of course species variation, but most of the poisonous (hot) animals i have dealt with are more than willing to use their poison, especially after aaclimating to a captive environment where they discover a lack of need for defensive uses. and those born in captivity often throw around their bite like mad, never having quite mastered the "sit still and nothing will eat you" trick

Okay, I'll give the beast a CR of 3, and turn a few of the feats into abilities. That should make people happy.

The reluctance to use its paralyzation ability stays. Its not a particularly agressive animal, and is good at running away. But I will note that tame specimens are noted for using it more often under stress.

Though I will note that captive snakes are more likely to be in situations where they have no way of escape, and being threatened than wild animals. So the same is more likely true of captive Green Masked Basilisks.

In other words, there are changes coming up.

Keep the comments coming in.

UPDATE

I have made changes to the Green Masked Basilisk, incorporating the suggestions made here in this thread and elsewhere.

The animal now has a CR, it is larger (3 feet tall at the shoulder, and 7 feet (half tail) in length), and a major change to its behavior is now in effect (a captive specimen is more apt to try paralyzing a foe when imperiled). I've also corrected such typoes as I could detect. If you find more, let me know where they are so I can fix it.

In bad news. I'm having an episode, so getting the Greater Plains Basilisk and the OGL up will have to wait until Sunday or Monday. More apologies to both Wizards and my fans.

The next basilisks after the Greater Plains will be the Magpie and Raven Basilisks. Both specimens of the Songbird Basilisk family. I am planning on doing three species of Greater, seven of Common, and thirteen species of Song Bird Basilisk. More may be added if there is any demand for them.

As before, these basilisks are replacements for the basilisk found in the MM. Something for the DM to add to his game to get his players out of any conceptual rut they might be in. Imagine the looks on their faces when you tell them, "There's a flock of basilisks checking you out, and rummaging through your supplies. Paladin, you have a fledgling napping on your chest.":p
