You're definitely underselling the joy of telling the DM you just did 28 points of damage; no, that wasn't a crit; no, my turn isn't over, that was just my first attack.
I fully agree with you...I loved going up to a Red Drake in a dungeon (adult dragon with no spells) with my L8 Samurai and saying....Fighting Spirit, GWM, hit, miss, Action Surge, hit, hit. 22 damage, 22 damage, 26 damage, yes DM, that is 70 HP lost.
(+2 weapon, S20, GWM with a great sword, average damage per hit is 24 damage)
Too bad the dragon did something like 60 HP to the whole party each in a tight corridor with the breath weapon before hand....I think I was the only one with the rogue to make the saving throw....
