I swear Gabriel Dolorosa just jumped up like 15 votes or something during the past few hours.
He is a popular guy around these messageboards-- I went to sleep last night ahead of him by 11 votes and when I got up I was behind by 3! He's doing very well, and honestly, his sample chapter does indicate to me that he is uniquely qualified to novelize the War of the Burning Sky.

All the entries are great, in fact. Especially, to my tastes, Andy Goldman's, whose prose I find wonderfully uncluttered, subtle, and well-composed; the fact that he has not done as well in the voting as some others mystifies me.

These last few hours are nerve-wracking (These are the last few hours, right?) The worst part is, I have a dental appointment scheduled in the morning, so if I lose, I'll be contemplating my artistic failures as I have my teeth drilled-- and if I win, my enjoyment will be marred by the aforementioned dental work. Ah, such is life.

Best of luck to everyone. It has been a privilege to be featured alongside such luminary fiction.

EDIT: I just came back to vote. I assume all the other authors voted for themselves, but I made a pact with myself when all this started. I decided to wait right until the end before voting, and if it wasn't close or I didn't have a shot at winning, I was going to vote for Mr. Goldman, whose entry had some qualities I thought mine lacked. But it is close, and I do have a shot, and I don't know exactly when this poll ends... so I panicked and voted for myself.

Now I just wish I could stop clicking back on this page and go to sleep.

Yep, today!

I'll tell you what, though. Even though 5 people won't win, I can say with certainty that - if they're willing - I do want to work with all of these people. You're all on that shortlist for a reason, and even if this gig goes to someone else, I hope you'll consider other gigs with EN Publishing.

Thanks for the kind words guys, and Jeremy, of course vote for yourself! :D

God, I thought it was nerve-wracking having the least # of votes, but being tied 84-84 in the last hours.... Now that would drive one crazy. Good luck.

Andy

OK, I'm going to close the voting in 4 hours from the timestamp of this post.

[Incidentally - don't pay too much attentin to the numbers above; like with the ENnies, etc., we'll remove any duplicate IP addresses. I didn't actually mean the figures to be visible for that reason, but it seems everyone can see them!]

The voting is now closed. I have not yet done the IP checking, so please don't get too attached to the above figures. Apologies in advance to those who share a computer or network - as always, with these things, we err on the side of caution.

Wow, this is nerve-wracking. My teeth are chattering, and not just from the dentist.

I don't know how IP addresses work. Do roommates who share an Internet connection have the same IP address? Also, would the computer lab a large university (like say, my own current scool San Francisco State, which has a large gamer community) just have one big IP address? Why do I have a sinking feeling...?

This whole thing is turning out to be full of surprises... and I happen to know the big surprise has not even been hinted at yet... ;)

When my nerves calm down, I want to post comments on the other authors' entries. Will the thread remain open?

Absolutely!

BTW, I'm really sorry to extend the wait further, but it's late here and I need to sleep! So I don't plan to do the final check until tomorrow. I hope that doesn't stress your nerves too much!

Plus, there's a whole load of WotBS related work (fiction, adventure writing, art, etc.) in the pipeline, so if any of you guys are interested in working on any of this, we'll be very, very glad to work with you.

I'm glad to hear that you're still interested in having the rest of us on board. I've stayed clear of the boards, and the vote, like the others - it's a bit tight on the nerves and I'm not a regular here. Still, it was fun to be involved and do hope to contribute to future work.

Pike
