Another Grognard Reviews 4e based on KotS

I prefer having a cleric cast cure light wounds than "Hey, Warlord! I have a sucking chest wound! How about some words of encouragement to heal it up?" I also prefer. "I power attack for 5." instead of "I use my daily chessmaster power to do 2w+ 2(str+y) damage and push him back two squares." Checkmate!

I can get the Cleric-Sucking Chest Wound thing (bad flavor text can suck), but the Power Attack thing? Never.

Tastes differ...

Nothing wrong with new games, but I'm sad the old game is no longer being made. :(
That, ultimately, sums up my feelings about 4e. I don't begrudge the people who are excited about 4e their game (though I sometimes feel like the feeling isn't mutual). It looks like a really good game for the goal of bringing new people into gaming. I'm just not interested in converting to it.

Instead of converting, I'll stay with 3e or find an alternative. I've been getting this urge lately to do something kinda "old school" ever since 4e was announced. I've been looking for an alternative system to run it.

Well, I'm definitely not liking the feel of 4E. It just seems like an uninspired minis game. The only reason I played DDM before was on pre-release tournaments to get the minis early for my D&D games. I was excited about geting new minis, but not playing the game. I really didn't care if I won or lost. That's the way I see 4E. It might be good to play occasionally, but I just don't see myself getting engaged by playing a system where you are completely healed from everything by resting for 6 hours, and all of your powers feel like you should be pushing a controller button instead of rolling a d20. I am really surprised that there isn't a save game power or magic item. I also wouldn't be surprised if Chinese gold farmers are a minion monster in the MM.

How did you wind up with a sucking chest wound? Damage is abstract. If you've defined the damage in a way that precludes non-magical healing, that's a problem. But not with the system.
