Anti-Tumble Feat

I just allow a "counter-tumble" using Tumble or Sense Motive, much the same as resisting a Feint. Make the check and you can get an AoO or whatever.

I made a house rule that I'm going to try out soon about it:

Tumble doesn't evade AoO. Instead, your tumble check result replaces your AC (unless your AC is higher).

The reason why I'm doing it is that the current tumble mechanic is so 2e: You have a fixed DC, and if you make that check, you're good. No one can stop you. Not even a god could get an AoO. I prefer to give everyone a chance. Not have characters playing against the wall, so to speak.

I do something similar with concentration and casting defensively.

Humm. Do they get to add their deflection and luck and other bonuses to this? If so then that does not sound too bad.

At higher levels, it is very easy for a PC with max ranks in tumble and a high Dexterity to destroy poor Joe Monster. :(
Maybe you can help me out with step 2 here :)

Step 1 - max out tumble
Step 2 - ???
Step 3 - win D&D

I dimly remember a feat out of Dragon that allows you to take AoOs even vs foes who have taken certain measures not to provoke them... such as having Improved Sunder, Improved Disarm and... tumbling? But hell if I can find it.

I thought it was in the Dungeon/Dragon with the Githyanki Incursion.

Robilar's Gambit will have to suffice :p

Step 2: combat monster PC who can/does...

1) charge/pounce
2) has Shadowblade feat with a really high dex mod (I think he just hit 50ish dex)
3) TWF chain and Chaos Monk (dragon mag?)... something like 6-9 attacks
4) and about 7d6 Sneak + Shadow Blend + Darkstalker feat5) typically only misses on a 1

...and who "1-shot" (full attack) critters well above his CR.

Last session he "cored" two CR 18 red Dragons in as many rounds.

I see what you mean. Tumble is clearly the problem here :)

If you were to invent such a feat, I would model it on Mage Slayer, including the fact that the potential tumbler realizes from the opponent's stance/fighting style that tumble might not work this time.... (I think that should be included in any feat that invents new excuses for AoOs, but that's just me.)

What i do...

Concentration: Casting defensively: your check result, if higher than your AC, is your AC against Attacks of Opportunity for casting while threatened. [add Combat casting and dodge bonuses if applicable to this check result.]

Tumble: Does not prevent AoOs, Your check result, if higher than your AC, is your AC against Attacks of Opportunity for moving through threatened areas. To this check result, add Mobility and dodge bonuses along with a bonus to this check = to double the creature’s size penalty. [Large=2, Huge=4, Gargantuan=8, Colossal=16]

how exactly are you getting a dex of 50. now i think thats the real problem here.... among other things.

Tumble isn't the end all and be all of the issue here. However, tumble is the only part we (T'sCousin and then me) asked about. Being able to have a few monsters take a swipe at him as he rushes in with his uber-charge-o-death would be nice.

Dex 50ish: I don't know. I'm not the DM here, and I haven't seen this guy's build in several levels. He is a templated Coure Eladrin though.

Hmm, interesting idea. I'll see what I can make of that.
