Anticipation for 3.5

Greetings all!

Here's something that's been bouncing around my skull for awhile now. I'm eagerly anticipation 3.5; the same thing happened when 3rd was released. Now, there is a vocal part of the community that isn't too excited about 3.5, just as there was a vocal part that wasn't excited about 3rd.

So what I want to know is, what makes an individual want it or not want it? Is it change (change bad, same good)? Is it something new (woohoo some new books and clarified...different...rules)?

Any thoughts?

for me it's a lot of "woohoo something new to look at." i love getting new gaming books to read over.

it helps that most of the changes i've seen hinted at so far i like. looks like i'll have even less house rules under 3.5 than i did under 3.0 (and that never exceeded two pages or so).

Well, I hate to sound unrealistic but since we're getting the revision in less than three years (3e went on sale in August 2000), I'd like that same $20 "promotion" price to upgrade my current set.

For me, it's the timing. Three years is too early for a revision, and personally not enough time to get enough feedback to warrant a consensus of changes and demands. In fact, they didn't distribute a formal questionnaire to determine what gamers want. They just monitor the conversations on messageboards.

That's why I'm not really excited for 3.5e as I was with 3e. I do like a FEW of the changes (they promised to mentioned in print regarding autosuccess/autofailure should apply to saving throws as well as attack rolls, but we've yet to see that) but not enough to buy the books yet, and even then I wise up and prefer to wait for the Second Printing.

I'm looking forward to how the classes were rebalanced and some of the spell changes, but overall I don't think I'm all that excited about 3.5

D) None of the above. Change for change's sake. The look of pain in my players' faces when I tell them that we're upgrading to 3.5, whether they like it or not.

You are all slaves to my complusive consumerism!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :p

On the plus side: "fixing" many "broken" rules.

On the down side: Cost. Screwing up my characters. My gnome rogue with the 6 charisma will now lose his innate magical abilities (ghost sound, etc.) since they will change from intelligence-based to charisma-based.

Now you can make a very compelling argument that 3 years is too soon for a revision, but I think three years is plenty of time to get the required feedback for one.

And because there was no publicly available questionnaire doesn't mean there wasn't formal reasearch done beyond just monitoring the messageboards. We just don't have the information to make that claim, I think. Or if we do, I haven't seen it.

I like 3rd edition because I felt like it took certain measures to return to the "feel" of 1st edition D&D....while improving upon items that people often complained about...

Racial Class Limits
No Skill System
Hard set weapons limitations based on class
Etc

Now however, with 3.5, I feel that they are throwing away that D&D feel in favor of the elusive "balance".

The sooner you come to realize that just like real life, RPG's are not meant to be balanced, the sooner you can get passed balance and have fun.

They are taking core parts of the game and shredding them, just to chase this dream of balance.

I mean..come on, Time Stop is a 9th level spell that is being reworded to affectively be the same as the 2nd level Cleric spell from 1st edition - Withdrawal.

No, honestly I am just fed up. While I will pick and choose a few things from 3.5 to include in my games, I will not buy the books and I will not switch over completely.

I think it is the buzz of newness.

eh.

To me the buzz isnt the same as 3e. That was a major change, and did do alot to garner interest in the hobby. DnD became truly different.

Now it seems to be a change for change sake. The main reason for many to revise is to be "up to date" And this isnt a bad thing. Others wiser than me have debated that the changes are needed or not, Im gonna wait and see.

3e has been perfectly serviceable and the revision may have problems. At least the revision doesnt totally make 3e "obsolete" like 3e did to ADnD(my apologies to 2e players-I know many who still play it and ODnD, and those are still perfectably viable). At least the new stuff coming out can still be ported to 3e and usable.

So for me srd for a while.

Gamingreport.com has a scan of a page in the DMG that talks about autosuccess/autofailure for saving throws as a variant rule.
