Any fantasy writers out there?!

Ever since my core gaming group picked up and left for Seattle, I have taken to fantasy fiction writing. As I pick through my first short stories, I wonder: are there any other fiction writers out there?

If you are out there, speak up with some advice or experience tales! Are there any dedicated forums for fantasy writers out there? What are some mentionable fantasy periodicals? So far the only mag that at all fits my style is Realms of Fantasy and even that is not a perfect match.

Feel free to post excerpts or summaries that you are proud of I really enjoy to read fresh fantasy from fellow gamers!

Happy scribbles,

Can you name some of the authors whose style you aspire toward? If your fiction has a strong D&D influence, Realms of Fantasy is indeed not a perfect fit.

Black Gate is devoted to adventure fantasy & has earned high praise for some of its stories, although its publication schedule may be erratic and response time to submission rather lengthy.

Weird Tales is the original home of sword & sorcery, dating back to Robert E. Howard, and one of the editors is Darryl Schweitzer, who contributed to some of the anthologies listed by Gygax in the original DMG recommended reading list!

Fantasy and Science Fiction is a non-obvious choice - they tend towards surrealist/literary fantasy, like Jeffrey Ford, but I sent them a short story I'd used as the sample chapter for a novel proposal to WotC and got back a favorable rejection letter, so they're worth a shot!

The Black Hole is a super-useful database of submission guidelines, average response times, etc.

EDIT: Since you're in Seattle, I'd strongly recommend applying to the Clarion West writer's workshop; it's quite an education.

Actually, I think he was saying that his D&D group moved to Seattle. Just out of curiosity, Trycade, where *are* you located? I ask because a husband-and-wife couple that I know from upstate NY just moved to Seattle, leaving their D&D group behind. Would be way spooky if we're talking about the same folks.

Tav, thanks for the great refrences. My favorite author is Howard and I have followed his work in Wierd Tales. Are any of those mags still in publication?

As for my style, I would probably classify it as adventure fantasy. It is heavily influenced by the gritty descriptions of the Howard Conan, with a higher fantasy element- very mystical.

I write in my homebrew fantasy world, Eldor. Once the perfect, pet-like creation of the late goddess of art, Inara, Eldor hangs in lonely vulnerablilty as the forces of evil begin to prey upon its lands.

It is a large world, teeming with life and exploration. In the current age, arcane and diving magics of the land and stars are just being harnessed, and the influence of discord plays plots among empires.

Not the same ones. I am located in Orlando.

Thanks agian for the input!

Yeah, the Writer's Market is an invaluable read. I'm still in the "aspiring" phase of writing, but it's really helped me think about the mechanics behind what I'm doing. In the past year I've really improved the "art" side of my writing as a result.

Look forward to many rejection letters in the days to come. Hopefully you'll make some headway, though. I've got a novel I've been trying to polish, polish, polish so I can (hopefully) get some interest generated in my work. Once I'm satisfied I think I'm going to start shopping for an agent; I'm getting tired of going it alone in unfriendly and unfamiliar waters.

If you want a fun place to present some short stories under very unsual constraints, check out Ceramic DM. The current compeition is alomst over, and there'll likely be a new one around the begining of Summer.
