Another thing to keep in mind is that you should really, really know your players before dubbing one of them the center of the story. I once ran a game with a new group where I made one character the center of the session, and it turned out quite badly, because the player in question wasn't equipped to be the leader/instigator of the session. All the other players kept looking towards the one guy because the session was focused on aspects of his backstory, but the guy just didn't have the zeal to lead the group.
So if your entire campaign is based on one guy seeking out the BBEG, you should be sure that the player of said guy is one capable of playing a "seeker" kind of character, or your campaign might grind to a halt for lack of momentum.
