You guys seriously don't like Necrophidius, Iron Cobras, Grell, Caryatid Columns, Slaadi, Needlemen or Fire Newts?

Guess I'm a Fiend Folio goob then. Heck, I even like Flail Snails.

Oh please, without the original Fiend Folio we would be without the unibunny (al-mi'raj), the fly with an attitude (assassin bug), the purty treasure cat (guardian familiar) and grumpy bigfoot (quaggoth) not to mention more mostly naked females (lamia noble and caryatid column).

But seriously we got Llolth, Drow, Svirfneblin, Mephits and Slaad.

Hmm- so are you saying that (including the ones mentioned above) the Drow, Death Knight, Eye of Fear and Flame, Skeleton Warrior, Sons of Kyuss, Kuo Toa, Penanggalan, Revenant, Retriever, Slaad (all), Grell, Nycadaemon, Mezzodaemon, and lord help us...the Flumph, aren't that "good?"

I think he's referring to the 3E Fiend Folio, Billy. It's been hinted that that's not a conventional monster compilation like it's predecessor.

Yeah.... I was talking about the new one... it seems that it is somehow different, but how exactly?

I'm rather curious...

Regarding the first edition FF... I have it and while I agree that the layout is kind of crappy, there were a lot of cool monsters as many posters have said.

I was not happy with many of the things in the orginal Fiend Folio. Many of the monsters just seemed like extras on Friday Night Fright or other shows that specialized in B movies. I did like and enjoyed it much more when I was young, but now in my crusty old age I seem to want a lot more out of a monster book. This might explain my neagtive reactions to many of them in the past month.

I sorta liked the "feel" of the Fiend Folio. If I'm not mistaken, it consisted mostly of fan-created material from a British publication from way back. Which, by the way, would be cool for EN World to do - have an open call for monsters, pick the best ones, and sell the result as a pdf to support the community.

Yeah, there were some lame critters in the FF (the Lava Children looked like Alfred E. Neuman on steroids, for example, and there were some really dumb ones like the adherer), but there were a number of very bizarrely usable monsters - the flumph and the tirapheg are what I would consider DM challenges: find a way to make 'em useful and cool.

There is a lot of very nice art in the FF, much of it very baroque in its detail. Stand-out pics for me are the Death Knight and the Githyanki (especially the cover).
