Do not have kids but have been to GenCon...

There is a kids area that you can drop your young ones at. They normally have stuff planed for them.

I might be wrong, but I think they did away with the kids area last year or the year before.

If you can get away for a little while one day rumor has it that there is a water park called Paradise Landing in the Hilton Hotel. The website addy is: http://www.paradiselanding.com/ Also there is the International Clown Hall of Fame inside the Grand Avenue Mall.

I have little people too (that won't be coming, greatfully...uh, um I mean unfortunately) and I was trying to imagine what they would like to do. As far as while you are at your booth or while gaming, I would have a leap pad or something and lots of coloring books and colors :)

Good Luck!

LadyGargoyle is right, I fear. I think all the major conventions have discontinued their child-care options out of fear of liability and litigation, which is a crying shame. Conventions could stand to be a little more family-friendly, especially if we're trying to encourage new generations of gamers (but that's another tangent).

I've got friends coming who are going to go do some fun non-convention activities with their daughter (like a trip to Six Flags, I think) and they've invited mine along for that. We're also staying in the Hilton, home of the water park that LadyGargoyle mentioned. And luckily we have some extra help for the show so I don't need to worry about being tied to the booth for unreasonably long hours.

Thanks for the ideas. I won't mention the "acquiring research materials" one though... bad enough her dad has her playing a 6th level halfling thief in NWN! ;)

I do hope it goes well enough that we can make this a tradition. I also hope that other EN Boarders (with or without children) will stop by and visit us at the booth if you see us there! (Green Ronin is right across from the autograph area, in booth 151.)

Hmmmm, call it a hyjack but NVM is a bit.. easy I played it on hardcore rules as a fighter (straight level 20 fighter in the 4 chapters) and I never ever died once! Just chop chop teleport teleport back chop chop chew chew. And some more stone of recall abuse and some more chop and chewing. Thief is on hardcore rules quite a challenge though! But I don't recommend fighter, just all to easy and you know how the turns always get screwed up and all the wizards get their spells ruined by your attacks anyway. So fighters for ever in D&D games, and the items that grant me immunity to poison, all sorts of drain, mind blank, death effects, critical hits.

They kinda ruin it. With AC 39 and 2 +4 unique Katanas and 280 HP. Nothing is stopping me. So kinda silly, I could even go to the toilet and grab some food and drinks while I left the game unpaused at the final boss and when I got back I was at euhh.. 217 Hp from the 279, disappointing.

But a good game and a nice story! And alot of can do things. But Baldurs gate 1 and 2 right after eachother in a 3 week marathon kept the best I ever played along with Starcraft and all the "Jagged Alliance" games.

Hyjack off =]

Actually, Origins had a childcare area. From everything I've heard, the kids who went enjoyed it greatly. Then again, Origins also had a non-gaming spouse entertainment track. Much coolness.

T'would be a shame if GenCon never restarts their childcare area. I have two boys, ages 4 and 3, and I would love to be able to bring them along in a year or two. Most likely two. :)

No kids area at Gencon? Bummer. I'm hoping when my wee one turns six next year, she'd be old enough for such things. Maybe when Peter Adkinson takes over, there'll be an improvement in that area.

Sadly, we've never made a Gencon, yet. Perhaps next year. Otakon is all we could manage this year (after Worldcon last year) and we're only going to that since we registered well in advance (curse you, stupid layoffs!).
