anyone else burned-out with D&D?

No, I love it. I've played DnD since 1st ed but had very little experience with 3rd. Last Thursday I played in my first ever session of 3.5 with pretty much straight core rules. It was a total blast. Our party of 2nd level characters went down a dungeon and killed some goblins. I still remember the excitement just before we fought the 'bosses' - a bugbear and a cleric.

My only previous encounter with 3rd before that was 3.0 using Savage Species *plus* Grim n' Gritty. All the PCs were monsters. It was interesting in many respects but very unbalanced and ultimately didn't work out. Since then I'd really longed to play 3.5 with the main rules only to see what the default is actually like.

I'm getting a little burned out on D&D, but I've played in several of the "Living" campaigns from the RPGA for years now and ran a home game for just over a year. I'd love to try something new like d20 Modern/Future or Star Wars d20 or anything that wasn't magic heavy.

Until I can find a group though I'll probably continue to play D&D as I really enjoy it while I'm playing or GM'ing.

Burned out? Heck no.

I feel like I need to make up for lost time, all those years wasted on "life" stuff and 'puter games. I wish I could game more. I certainly have plenty of room for improvement. Too bad for me, I don't have a steady work schedule. If I did, I'd line up a group for every night of the week.

I am. I am tired of "high fantasy" which really means "Diablo with dice" or "who wants to help count magic items?"

Someone asked for help on a psionics board for a 20th-level NPC, and I realized I couldn't do it, just because I didn't want to deal with 200k worth of items.

I'm not burned out on D20 or RPGs, though; I'll gladly run D20 Modern or Future, or (if I ever get around to it) Conan, Grim Tales or any other low-item product, but I won't DM DnD for a while. At least not until Book of Iron Might comes out.

But that's only part of it.

Complete Warrior was so bad I found I couldn't even look at the DnD products the last two times I was at Hairy Tarantula - except Unearthed Arcana (which I knew lots about already). I managed to crack open Serpent Kingdoms, but other than looking at a few pictures I put it down. I didn't want to see any more terrible crunch. I hardly click on threads involving new WotC products anymore (and therefore don't know the contents of the book like I usually do) because of that, too.

I find to have the most fun with d20 is to swap off. We usually play Hero one week and then d20 the other. Both provide a lot of room to move around in. We try to stay to those two rules styles so we dont get to confused. But then again the d20 game we play is in the Everstone setting and the d20 rules for that game are very different than typical.

I never had any burnout when I played back in 1st edition days but then I played a lot of different games: D&D, Star Frontiers, Gangbusters, Boot Hill, etc. I also had a really great gaming circle that alled liked the same stuff and style of play.
I've been playing 3ed D&D for a couple of years now and I have mixed feelings about the new system but mostly good. My circle of gamers is more diverse now so it is harder for everyone to be happy with the same style of gaming. I don't care for all of the politics that generates.
But without a doubt, my biggest burnout generating issue would be the endless stream of new material coming out for the game almost every month. A lot of it just seems like a rehash of the same old crunch with new names attached but if I don't try and keep abreast of all this new material I feel like I might miss out on something really useful and interesting.
I see myself under a self imposed moratorium on all new material sometime in the near future. I need to find a good place to stop and just be happy with what I've got, then let wizards soak some other suckers for a while.

"There's just too much crap in this Haversack!"
