Anyone else here rather not play but does like to DM? venty

I'm our group's 'main dm,' but one of the other guys (he's around here occasionally as omrob) runs a couple of campaigns once in a while. I think I've gotten him back to a fairly regular thing, too! :)

I do, however, prefer to dm, though I enjoy both. I just really, really love the world creation aspects of dming.

The situation we've ended up in is that the person who would most like to play in that campaign invariably end up being the referee.

I referee our D&D campaign and our Star Trek campaign. A friend referee's the Traveller campaign, another referees the LotR, and yet another Stormbringer. Each of us would "prefer" the campaign that we run rather than the ones that we play.

While at first glance this seems a bit odd, the investment you make as a referee (emotional and time) means that you need to love the campaign to keep it going.

I love to DM because I can't write...a book...it is a way for me to be creative, entertaining, and be a story-teller.

Anyone can be a DM but not a good one or a great one and while you can learn to be good, to be a great DM is a calling.

Players have to find characters that interest them and that they can invest passion into, I have always found that spending time on character concepts and background makes people want to play in games that they don't have too much interest in.
