Anyone Else Left Out Of Di Due To A Slow Computer?

When news came out of the Dungeon and Dragon magazines I was very bitter yet I knew it made sense for WoTC. I couldn't figure out why I was angry until the other day when going to their homepage to look at miniatures for Night Below.

It takes over ten minutes just to get onto their site.

I can not get DI if only because I live in an area that doesn't support better communication lines. I am stuck on a modem that does 24-26 bits of info. Not even the 56.

I am angry because the option has been removed from me while most can still decide whether they want the new method / media of getting their DnD fix.



So, my question is.....

Are there anyone else in my position? I know it won't be many but I wonder how many there are and want a shout out from them.

Mmmm...rural BFE. I come from Western Kentucky, so I feel your pain, especially when I'm at my parents' house and the best connection I get is 28.8. (shudder)

And you don't have an option for cable, for a cable modem, right?

There might be an option for satellite internet, of course, which may or may not be available; it's probably not worth getting just for the DI, but if you can, it might be handy. Also, now at home they're talking about mounting wireless internet antennas on water towers to cover most of 7 counties, and that seems to be coming fairly soon.

I have broadband but if they use anything Windows only I'm out... Particulary if it is DRM...

At this point, there's only a small number of areas in the United States that don't have access to broadband. There are certainly folks in your position, mega, but they're dwindling in numbers all the time.

Technically that's not a slow computer, though. If you DO have an old computer without a lot of RAM, upgrading that may make things a little better.

Cable stops within site of the house. When I inquired about it I was given a full page mathematical equation breaking down the cost. No final cost was listed but I was told I would have to PAY FOR IT ALL to reach the house then PAY for the services on top of that.

I live in a river valley. The satelite sits at about 32 degrees in the sky. The mountains go to 32-34. Simple thing like damp leaves and I get no reception.


State of Vermont is proposing that BUSINESSES pay for the extensions of cable / internet. Most businesses will not come to this state already due to the taxes. Now this.

I am truely near the stage of leaving this place.

i would probably more likely have a problem in that the DI would almost certainly be blocked at work (as Wizards' site already is), and at work would be the primary place i'd most likely do all of my printing and viewing. we'll see though.

Not being able to use the DI would be about 785,896th down on my list of reasons to move. But having crappy internet in general would be a top 10, maybe even top 5 if it was as bad as you describe.
