d20 "light" good points all but... Ok, ColH...between your notes about the figher/feats and combat system, and wsmith pointing out how AoO's are tied closely with several feats etc....I think I'm finally ready to give up on any sort of D20 light version or whatever you want to call it. However, I am now pretty much exasperated. I get together frequently with some of the members of my regular DnD group on the spur of the moment/short notice...it just sort of happens...we end up hanging out, and decide we want to play. Usually when this happens, we don't want to play the main campaign, because some of the other members aren't present. What we would like to do is to all get the chance to play different character classes/archetypes at high levels in 1 session/1 shot "stop the dragon" style play just for kicks. We've already tried creating 20th level 3E characters and jumping in that way, but our time is usually limited to say at most 4 hours in an evening for these impromptu sessions. By the time 4-5 players build 20th level characters, it's already taken so much of that time. Then, because of the great complexity you have in D20 combat etc. with all of the high level options, a single combat takes *way* way way too long and we don't enough time to get through the 1-shot in a single session. I need a system that a) has a single bonafied core mechanic that remains consistent throughout (like the D20 core mechanic), b) supports a DnD like setting and character style, C) allows for the creation and play of epic, grim, high level, powerful characters and D) has a very fast combat system and that will support winging things where necessary etc. If anyone has any ideas as to another system (yea I know this is the 3E/D20 forum, but I figure a lot of folks here would have experience with other various systems as well)?? I've given up looking for this myself as everything I've tried as either bogged in combat or just taken way to long to create high level characters in... Thanks,
