Anyone else miss real cantrips?

A lot of the old cantrips are subsumed in "Prestidigitation". "Sneeze" is somewhere. My druid used it, so probably Magic of Faerun or MotW.

Uh, yeah...cantrips were then covered in an even more flexible way than they were before. Prestidigitation (read the spell description; dry, for example, is well within the bounds of it) covered most of the ones from earlier editions, and the 0 level spells added in a lot more potential (sneeze would fit within the bounds of daze quite well).

Prestidigitation is my single favorite spell in the PHB...

Those things they call cantrips in 3E are just 1st level spells in disguise. What ever happened to the good ol cantrips like dry and sneeze? What are you favorite old sytle cantrips?

What ye speak of lassy? 3e cantrips are a manly mans cantrips! No wussy cantrip does 1d3 points of electrical damage! No wussy cantrip can do 1d6 points of damage to undead!

I liked Gygax's old 1st ed illusionist cantrips:

Rainbow (a toned-down version of Color Spray)
Two-D Illusion (toned-down Phantasmal Force)
Mask (lesser Change Self)
Mirage (also sorta like Phantasmal Force)
Dim (sorta like a lesser Reduce Flame/Darkness)
Haze (lesser Wall of Fog)

I look forward to seeing your conversions over in the Conversions forum.

Hmmm in answer to some of the posts, yes I know 3E has "cantrips" I did say that, and yes I know the 3E cantrips are more usefull than previous editions. My opinion is, that 3E ones are pretty much like old 1st level spells and we lost the feel of what the old cantrips were supposed to be like. As for Prestidigitation, I guess that could cover a lot of the old cantrips, but it just doesn't have the same feel saying I am going to memorize Prestidigitation instead of sneeze or itch, what have you. Thanks for the replies.

One casting of Prestidigitation gives you an hour's worth of magical tricks. That's a pretty good bargain. You could do an awful lot of laundry with an hour's worth of prestigiditation.

The point is that you still can do that. When you memorize Prestidigitation, just say you're going to use it for whatever cantrip(s) you want. The only difference is that all the cantrips aren't detailed out - there's no reason for it, really.

0 level spells are a lot less powerful than 1st level spells of any edition, really.

cantrips

i also kinda miss the old cantrips. prestidigitation is cool and all, and covers most of the old ones but i miss the detail. hard to describe accurately i guess.

kinda like if i said all cantrips were under the spell "cantrip" and then all you did was memorize that one spell to do them all. dunno how accurate that is but something like it. :)
