Anyone else wait for a series to end.

Oh, I'm glad you said that. I was debating picking that up as soon as book three was out in paperback; now I know to wait.

Any idea how long it is supposed to be?

Yes, I wait for the entire series to come out whenever possible (and not just because I don't like waiting, but also because I hate having books of different sizes and appearances bundled together from the same series - if I wait, the chance is better that I'll be able to get a nice, homogenous row of spines on my bookshelf...)

In fact, I do this with gaming books too. I waited for the 2e Encyclopedia Magica to come out in all four volumes before buying it. I did the same for all four volumes of the 2e Wizard's Spell Compendium, and the same again for the 2e Priest's Spell Compendium. In fact, with the latter, I ended up waiting ages for the fourth volume to come out... before I realised that there were only three. Ahem.

Though lately, the trend seems to be not finishing series. I had high hopes for Naomi Novik Teremaire novels and Jim Butcher's Aleran Codex, but both turned out to not be trilogies.

Hmm, I guess I thought the Aleran Codex was a trilogy too, though I guess I'm not terribly surprised to find out it's not. The Novik books never came across to me as a trilogy, I think because of the Hornblower feel (Hornblower not being a trilogy of course).

I really liked the Novik books, what a great setting. The Aleran stuff isn't groundbreaking or anything, but are good enough reads.

Personally, I don't usually wait, but that's just because I don't have the patience. I read a lot, and that means I'm usually looking for something to read, I don't want to wait.

I was surprised to see a new Donaldson Thomas Covenant book out. Bought it, and have gotten a little way in.

I tend to try and wait these days, that's what I'm doing with Robin Hobb's Shaman's Crossing series. I bought book 1 and 2, but have not read them yet. I think for me it started when I read book 1 of Melanie Rawn's Exile series. Book two took a year or so from that to be published. Book three is still unfinished 12 years later.

Usually now if I read a series before it is finished, it is because I was unaware that it was part of a series when I picked it up (Tad Williams' Otherland), or that the series was not yet complete. Once I start a series, I end up reading each book as it comes out because I don't want to wait possibly several years to get another taste of the story.

Frequently, I wait until a series is completed.

If I get partway through a series, and then have to wait a year or more to get the next book, I'm likely to want to go back and reread the prior books. While sometimes I don't mind that, it is often not the most efficient use of my reading time. So, for example, I started Song of Ice and Fire. I love it. But, I put it down, because George RR Martin is just too darned slow to get new books out. I'd rather do my waiting up front.

That being said, I do typically like to wait a little while between books in a series - I will sometimes "burn out" on an author if I read too much of their work at a stretch. So, I will often reading a couple series at a time.

I have no idea. He could end it in the next book (Captain's Fury, December 2007) or it might be several more.

It's a good book, don't get me wrong, but sometimes things need to end.

If you're a fan of his first two Unbeliever trilogies, this one looks to be just as good. Unfortunately, Donaldson is one of the slowest writers out there. This series is supposed to be four books long, with the last being finished in 2011. Reminds me of the old Heinz ketchup commercial - (queue music) ANTICIPATION...

I'm waiting for the current season of 24 to end and come out on DVD.

Then we're going to watch it in a single sitting. Being 24 fans, we're comfortable with using 'coercion' to ensure that everyone stays awake.

It depends. Sometimes I wait until the series is finished. I really don't like to start a series until I know all the books are out.

Sometimes though I start because the book sounds really good like Harry Potter or the Harry Dresden books though with Dresden all the book were out when I started.

For example I was really annoyed with Zelzany Chronicles of Amber the book left off in a cliffhanger and I hate to wait forever it seemed for the second book.

I am like that with some TV series for example I wait until Lost comes out on DVD so I can watch it in one gulp the same with 24.

I don't have the patience for it, but sometimes I'd like to be able to.

I'm partway through so many series right now, and I usually have to do a lot of rereading.

But I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.

And I'd rather die having read the first four books of the Malazan book of the Fallen, than not having read them.
