Anyone going to GenCon SoCal?

It is less crowded, but then it's also less crowded.
I can see the joy in it, but it gets to you when the niche games you want to play are constantly canceled because of lack of players :( .

Work stuff has kept me from going the last two years. I am hoping that I'll be able ot make it for at least a day or two this year.

Hi reveal,

Just a warning. My girlfriend and I went to so cal last year after she had such a blast at gencon. Well, we found out that they are NOT the same. There are far less exhibitors (less than a quarter and the big ones such as paizo and reaper don't even go ) . The people are far more laid back and there are no more than 3 to 5 thousand. The hotels are nicer, cheaper and closer but nothing's open food wise after 11 oclock (we paid 20 dollars for a hamburger at 3 in the morning.. .yes that is how hungry we were... and yes we fought over the last pickle).

If you've never been to cali before and want to take in the atmosphere then go and have fun being there, but if youre looking to go to replace indy you'll be sorely disappointed. YOu'd be better off going to U-con, foundation games con (end of september) and trinicon (in october). YOu'll spend far less money and get about just as much "gaming" satisaction out of it.

Yes it's smaller than Gen Con Indy, but it's still friggin' HUGE, especially compared to most local Cons. It's got tons of exhibitors, game events, cool seminars, True Dungeon and Disneyland!!! What else do ya want? More people? I thought the problem everyone had with this year's Gen Con Indy was TOO MANY people?

Besides, it will never get any bigger with people bad-mouthing it. :p

And Paizo was there last year. I know I bought a Dungeon from them.

I'm not bad mouthing it, I had fun with hte atmosphwere, but it was no indy. My highlight of so call with doing true dungion again, but I had way too many events canceled because of lack of people. If we didn't do something popular we couldn't do it. From painint events to board games.

Plus it wasn't as easy to get pickup games and such started with fewer people and the excess people tourists from disneyland.

The exhibition hall is super small and popular vendors don't even bother to make the trip. Part of the fun of iNdy is the multitude of different exhibitors. I saw more porn stars with booths than popular rpg publishers.

I don't regret the trip, califorina was a nice place, but If I graded it solely on gencon socal I would have been very let down.

Are you sure Paizo was there? I remembereed wanting to subscribe at so-cal last year and there not being a booth for them and there was a posted note explaining why they weren't there (but they sponsored the brochure). I came home and emailed them.

I found it a lot easier to get into games at SoCal generally, but there were a lot of cancellations on Sunday especially.
I think with this new date they're hoping that people will combine it with Thanksgiving travel or something.

I'm thinking about going. It's about a two hour drive north of me, so it's not hard for me to get there. It might be tough for me to go, because of my work schedule then. I have to see if I can get the time off, which could be difficult.

I'll be there and while Indy was amazing I had a ton of fun the last 2 years of SoCal.

The more people go, the bigger it will get.

Game ON!
