Anyone have Grim Tales?

Outstanding!

Ben,

I just have to say that this is excellent work. I buy very few titles. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of gaming titles I have purchased in the last 18 months. I went into my FLGS yesterday to pick up a long overdue copy of EP's A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe and also inquired about Grim Tales.

It had just arrived (1 copy) with that day's shimpment about 10 minutes before I got there. I leafed through it for 15 mins and bought it immediately. I have skimmed through most sections and read a few in detail.

All I can say is "Why didn't you do this 3 years ago?" :D!

I really like the magic section (one of the few I have read in detail) and love the way the book is organized. It is an excellent "tinker's kit" for those DMs (and players) that really want to customize their campaign in a logical way and incorporate many of the d20 Modern ideas without actually having to go out and buy d20 Modern (hooray!).

Thanks for the great work!

It really is superb. I read the manuscript, but I'm dying to get a final copy.

A number of different sections impressed me. I treasure the "best of d20 Modern and Spycraft" car chase system, because I think it combines cimematic play and ease of use very nicely. Like Old One, I think the magic system is brilliant. I've never seen a system for dangerous spell use that I really liked before this, and it does a great job at recreating the feel of eldrich/gritty sorcery.

Would it help any if I told you I started it 3 years ago?

Ok, not quite, but damn near. I have some really, really old playtest notes; it's fun to look back now and see how much the final product changed over the course of development.

When I started work it was intended as a campaign setting a la Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Those influences are still there, but the book is now "setting-less" and I think is a more useful product because of it.

I like to think of Grim Tales as my, "What will I run at Peg Con this time?" book. I feel like with those rules I can relive all the cool books and movies that we gamers have as a shared experience. Perfect for 4 hours of play with complete strangers who don't need to arrive or leave with anything other than their imaginations-- and a d20.

So, Wulf, forget anyone in your section 15? Some of those vehicle feats and rules look a lot like another little game I own. ;)

Well, my first response to you was, "Well, other than Spycraft, which is obviously in the S15, I don't know what you could be talking about."

Obviously, clearly unintentional. Spycraft is credited in the front matter, referenced within, and OGC used extensively throughout: feats, skills, action points, vehicles, firearms-- so extensively this is akin to forgetting to credit the SRD.

This is the start to a looooooooooong day.

Anybody who doubts the existence of gremlins, believe me, they are out there.

Does that mean you are currently working on a review?

That depends what you mean by "working on a review". ;) In a roundabout way, I am taking my first steps towards getting a review of Grim Tales out. Which is to say that I am reading it and absorbing it.

But I haven't started composing it yet. I try to get reviews out in the order I receive them and I have a bit of a queue. (Next in the queue is, actually, Book of Unusual Treasures, which I read while I was on travel earlier this week.)
