Anyone played a Marshall?

Lol. Well, let's get literal then. ;) It says a marshal's auras affect all allies who can hear the marshal. If a marshal isn't talking, there's nothing for allies to hear.
But they can still hear him, even if he's not making a noise! :)

Moreover, since the aura is dismissed the instant allies can't hear him, that also pretty strongly implies that constant talking is required to sustain the effect.
Yeah, it's implied, but not spelled out.

Otherwise, there would be at least some short-term lasting effect on the allies after the ability stops funcioning, as there is for the inspirational bonuses provided by bardic music. After all, allies would't necessarily know if the marshal's been hit with a Silence or Hold Person spell that round, or whether he's just being quiet for a few seconds, would they?
I believe the ability is inspirational stuff, not constant chattering. The heroes have to be able to hear him when he says something, but that doesn't mean he's always saying something for the effect to occur.
As long as he's able to be heard, the ability functions :)

I just started playing a Marshal, and right now the party is mostly 3rd level, with one or two at 4th. Haven't been in a fight yet, but it seems like this is a good class for somebody who wants a character with martial ability yet also interesting roleplaying and out-of-combat abilities. He's got the social skills, he's got the Motivate auras, and he can be a good team player.

My DM was worried about it becoming too much of a support role, but since there are very few combat character, I'm not too concerned. Also, I have to make sure that I don't step on the bard's toes too much. Overall I like it, and for this setting it meshes really well with being an officer in the military.

I just started playing one last week. I had a lot of fun with it, although one unfortunate encounter with a thunderstone rendered my auras useless to all but one other character in the party for one hour (which was about three fights).

I started at 2nd level, taking the "Master of Tactics" minor aura and the "Hardy Soldiers" major aura.

I rolled up pretty good ability scores:

Str 14
Dex 13
Con 15
Int 15
Wis 12
Cha 16

Upon reflection, the 16 should have gone to Int, and a 15 to Cha. I basically hosed myself out of 7 skill points for the short term gain of having a slightly better minor aura. :(

As a DM, I've converted many of the higher-level NPC's in the Silver Marches into marshals, or at least given them a few levels of marshal. That's what's really great about this class: it lets you create military commanders who don't have to take levels of aristocrat just to have some leadership skills.

The DM is within his rights to rule that the character save vs. losing his voice. I put this in about the same category as walking around with weapons unsheathed in town or wearing plate armor to the ball.
The best being the Motivate Charisma minor aura. I have this mental image the Marshall looming over some schlub at the negotiations table and yelling "Be more confident, maggot! Be more personable! Find out what he wants and address the situation in terms of that, you dirt-bag!!", seething like some crazed drill sergeant.

That being said, I love the class.

Ah! This is just the concept that I've been looking for but haven't been able to wrap my brain around! It's the Cyrano de Bergerac/Baron Muchausen-esque fellow! Amazing! Up until this I was thinking of a mixture of Bard/Cavalier..................but now the choice is CLEAR!

I'm a poet and don't know it........

;~D
