AoO Help

Yep, these again, but at least my question should be fairly simple.

How do AoO work concerning movement? I know that if all you take is a 5' step then you don't provoke one. I've got two people who see things differently and I'm wondering which one is correct (if either is)?

One states that you only provoke an attack of opportunity when moving out of a threatened area (5' of course being exempt). For example I take a 10' step up to an enemy and attack them I wouldn't sufferer an AoO but should I take a 10' step back the next turn I would.

The other states that I would incur a AoO on both counts. So which one of them is right, or are they both wrong and it's something else.

P.S. I would appreciate if you would quote relevant sections of the rule books. (Or Page Numbers)

The first person is basically right, but note the second exception...

If your only activity for the round is movement (not run), then you can ignore the first square you leave.

Therefore you can move up and attack, and move away (while not doing anything else) the next turn without provoking any AoO (unless - of course - the opponent has reach).
