Ape Price? (not Ape Prince)

How much does a normal ape out of the Monster Manual cost? Has anyone seen a cost in a book or somewhere?

Try the _Arms and Equipment Guide_. I know they had livestock prices in it and might have guidelines for other animals/monsters. Someone may have a copy handy now, but if not I can check for you when I get home.

No ape price in the A&EG, but I'd say the price of a 2nd level druid spell would work (animal friendship that could make the animal friendly to someone other than the druid).

Right - though that's in areas where apes are more common, of course. You can also get animals stats/prices and more in Goods and Gear: the Ultimate Adventurer's Guide (out now!).

Bear in mind that the price of an animal might be dependent upon how close the buyer is to its native habitat. Feel free to wildly inflate prices to account for shipping, feeding, etc. Transport would probably run the same price as the character physically going there.

On the other hand, the local wacky noble might have a zoological garden, and part with an animal for far less.

Arms & Equipment Guide has no entry for apes --- the closest equivalent is a girallon, with a cost of 4000gp and a training cost of 3000gp. (sorry, couldn't find any upkeep values)

Mind you, that's for a 7 HD magical ape. I'd assume that a non-magical ape would be considerably less, maybe 1/5 to 1/10 of that. A rhinocerous is only 200gp, a young elephant 500gp --- importing a gorilla must cost somewhere in that range.

(I'm assuming a great ape --- gibbons might run you the same as a large monkey) (wow, those anthropology degrees are serving me reeeeeal well these days)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The reason I ask for the price of an Ape is because Magebred animals (from Eberron) increase the price of animals by x2. I plan to buy a magebred ape for my next character; with the strength increase, multiattack feat, and improved speed, he makes a great pack ape that can be trained easily and can defend my lewt.
