Apple Safari Beta Browser released for Windows

I have been using Safari as my default browser on my Mac for some time, now, but then again I also use OS X's Mail app for my mail and iChat for all of my IM needs.

The only issue, as others have mentioned, is with Java. If you're in a java chat and open a new tab, you kill java. So, open a new window for java chats and all is well.

When I get a website message that says "This site does not support your browser", I simply don't visit that site anymore.

Some of the skinning techniques I'm going to be using will NOT look good in IE 6 -- upgrade now.

And for those of us at the mercy of a corporate IT department? We can't install anything. Heck, they just started giving people Winderz XP last year; there's no way they're going to upgrade our IE beyond 6.

The stealth skin will remain and be unaffected by texture problems - that's the skin you should use to browse at work *if* you browse at work.

Firefox 2 will run on Windows 2000. You can get a version of it that can run off a zip drive. This said, I would recommend not visiting any hobby site on a corporate network that draconically policed - it could cost you your job.

Huh. I have never tried the other skins. Trying stealth right now...hmm. I prefer the default. I hate screens full of light-colored pixels.

My network isn't draconically policed. Heck, I've stumbled across pr0n sites. I don't think they block any IPs at all; I just make sure not to spend any time on hotsexbigpr0nsite.xxx or whatever. I.T.'s goal is to keep all the software uber-compatible, so upgrades are always years behind. I suspect IE 7 may happen in a year. Or two. Maybe. And I'm running a severely locked-down version of XP, so I can't run FireFox from another drive. I've tried.

(I am astonished to see which absurd terms this site's profanity filter "catches," and which ones are ignored. Seriously. Are you guys ever going to come up with a consistent solution?)

There are even two choices to upgrade to (Firefox and Opera).

And Apple has released a new Windows version of Safari, 3.0.1:
"The security improvements in Safari Beta 3.0.1 include correction for a “command injection vulnerability,” corrected with additional processing and validation of URLs that could otherwise lead to an unexpected termination of the browser; an out-of-bounds memory read issue; and a race condition that can allow cross-site scripting using a JavaSscript exploit."

Yeah, I saw that, but if you go to the Apple site, there is no indication of an upgrade version. It just says "Safari 3." I believe the mac sites, but ... how did they get this information?

If you download it, it probably has a different version number under Help->About Safari. Also, there are software development mailing lists where that kind of info would get (officially) posted. Apple likes to hide "unnecessary" info from the user, and version numbers are typically part of that.
