Appropriate Mount for Paladin

How about Celestial Pegasus? I did once also see a Paladin with Leadership combine his cohort and special mount for a Celestial Pegasus with Paladin levels...

What sort of mount could the Pegasus paladin summon?

lmao! a pegasus paladin with a mount. probably a human! lol.... I always thought the war griffin was good choice; they get the advancement easlier than, say, a dragon; but are quite strong.


geez tho, riding a gold dragon; makes me wish Anne McCaffery was around here. those stats should be in the monster manual; but me'thinks it might be pretty awesome, even for a very young one. paladin mounts are fun; I've always wanted to make a mounted party, with everyone that has riding feats and horses. The only problem is, what happens when you have to go inside the evil temple?

I think it evens says unicorns for females only (of the human, elf, half elf variety) at 6th.....rather like the picture for dragon magazine that introduced the cavalier for 1e. Rather nice piccie of knightly elf on unicorn

In the new Dragon Magic they have a Variant for the Paladin Mount called a Drakkensteed. They are basically like a Heavy Warhorse but look Draconic. Great way to get a Dragon-looking mount even at low levels. Plus it advances the same as a Paladin's Warhorse except it can't command animals.

So, if I were to get say a celestial pegasus, would it have all the bonuses for being a paladin's mount (according to the table in the PHB)? Or would it have lower bonuses because it is stronger than a horse?

Also, could someone please give me the list of optional mounts in the DMG? Or at least some of the ones around my level?

EDIT: I have another question. When I originally gave the idea of having a paladin with an optional mount to my DM, he immediately said no, telling me that it would unbalance the game and my character would be too strong? Is this true?

It would have lower bonuses, the DMG has the info on what it gains (unfortunately I don't have my DMG on me at the moment.)

Well, the DM has the final say on what he'll allow and not allow. Flying mounts in particular can change the dynamic of the game significantly if you are not involved in dungeon crawls. Personally, our group allows optional mounts but we require you spend a feat on Leadership and the special mount counts as your cohort (Still limited by cohort max level).
