[April] What you've watched

Flash Gordon serials - yes!! I loved those as a kid.

I recently rented the following films:

- Vidocq. I had trouble watching this at first because my DVD player was set to play 1.85:1 movies in fullscreen. Once I finally got that figured out... I really enjoyed this movie. It looked fantastic and I really wasn't ready for the plot twist. Kind of weird but nifty stuff. (19th century mystery involving people being murdered with directed lightning, and a villain called The Alchemist)

- Alexander Nevsky. This is an old (1930s!) movie that is really a propaganda piece for the Russians. However it has some impressively large battle scenes fought on a frozen lake, and a terrific score.

I saw this movie with my brother a number of years ago in Milwaukee at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. They had a live orchestra play along as the soundtrack. The terrific score, for those who don't know, is by Prokofiev.

Just finished the Samurai Trilogy and it's really good. Not as great as Seven Samurai but fairly entertaining. Required viewing for anyone running an Oriental campaign.

Also Baran, a Iranian film about a laborer who falls in love with an Afghan girl disguised as a boy at his work site. Lots of stunning imagery and a wonderfully told story.

Welcome to the world of tomorrow!

I've been watching me some Futurama.

Saw Spirited Away last weekend. It is the finest animated film I've ever seen, and far and away the best film of 2002.

Yes, I liked it better than The Two Towers

While I didn't see SA, I'm also in the tTT wasn't the best movie of 2002 camp.

Oh yeah Vidocq wasn't bad but didn't like the ending too much. Saw The Langoliers which was ok until the munchers appeared. After that it went rapidly downhill.

Also Amores Perros which had a great first third, a so so second half and a not so great final third.

The 13th Warrior, Excalibur, The Messenger and some episodes from the first season of SG-1. Very inspiring stuff to watch in between gaming and writing/editing stints. :)

I watched Bulletproof Monk and thought it was average. A terrible beginning but Chow's charisma made it watchable. Not worth rushing to the theaters for though.

I finally finished Season 1 of Angel.

I'd bought it when it came out, and farted around, watching episodes here and there. Up until last weekend, I was halfway through disc 2 of the 6-disc set.

Over the weekend, I was bored - decided to watch another couple of episodes, finish off disc 2. The last episode on that disc is "I Will Remember You," the first Buffy crossover episode. Wow.

It only took 3 episdoes to get me hooked on Buffy. Now I am officially hooked on Angel as well. Season 2 is slated for August, Buffy 4 for June.
