Aquaman - Official Trailer 1

The DC movies made money, but with the most famous superheroes ever that was almost guaranteed.

I think that WB, in trying to differentiate its movies from Marvels took a gamble on trying to present an adult DC product via Snyders Grim and Gritty take on the genre. The gamble didnt pay off as well as they wanted it to. the general audience didnt want it and WB failed to grasp the power of modern social media (Marvel in contrast has used social media well)

Now with Snyders departure and Wonder Womans success I do think WB has learnt from its mistakes, and Shazam and Aquaman will be the test as to whether it can pull off a movie with a bit of added pizazz and levity.

I think its also notable that WB is moving its marketing to Worlds of DC rather than DCU, it seems to invoke Elseworlds and that gives DC the chance to experiement with different mixes of character and style until they find something that hits the mark (even doing things like casting 2 different Jokers), but thats also why I think the announcements need to be treated as a public brainstorming exercise rather than a definite movie roster...

anyway positive about the upcoming movies..

That's probably the result of a clause in Jared Leto's contract though.

They all made plenty of money. Ignoring the occasional billion-dollar outlier these days, the half-billon and up each of them made is a massive amount for a movie. Very few movies make that much.

Worldwide the 5 movies have made $3.7B between them. They aren't going to run out of money.

I guess I should really not be surprised. However, of course they are also trying to create (and maintain) a franchise. If the general audience perception of their movies is negative, this does not bode well for future installments of the franchise. They can expect a quick drop in audience numbers which each subsequent movie.

Is anyone excited for a Suicide Squad 2 for example?

Break-even points for films are much higher than the actual budget. According to Wikipedia, the break even point of Justice League was $750 million and it made $657 million worldwide, so it fell short by over $90 million.

So how’s that work?
What does break even mean in this context?
