aquatic world-input?

i am in the process of creating a sort of homebrew world, and i could use some creative input. here's what i have so far:

the world is an alternate dimension variant of greyhawk. up until about 200 years ago, it was greyhawk. but there was a war among the gods (isn't there always?) and it wreaked havoc on the planet. entire continents sank or were sundered into smaller islands. i haven't decided what caused the godswar yet. many of the original greyhawk gods are dead and have been replaced by newer, younger gods, or their portfolios have been taken over by other gods.

the dwarves were almost completely wiped out in the flooding. when you live in subterranean tunnels and can't swim, massive floods are always bad news. halflings tend to operate casino/pleasure barges. gnomes are somewhat like dragonlance gnomes, but they actually know what they are doing. these gnomes have managed to build a fairly powerful submarine navy using magic and technology.

corellon larethian is one of the most powerful gods left from the old pantheons. when the underdark began to flood, he managed to convince lolth and the drow to return to the fold. lolth is his consort now. as a result, elf/drow crossbreeds are fairly prevalent in this world. half elves with sea elf ancestry are also fairly common. these half breeds can function equally well on the surface and underwater. corellon has made it clear to the elves that dissension and racism among themselves is not tolerated; even half elves are given full elven status now. all elves are considered members of the elven nation.

the sahaugin and yuan ti are the main evil races. the sahaugin are more of a threat now than ever before. every nation borders the ocean, and they have much more room to expand. the yuan ti are also threatening, in a different manner. they are attempting to summon a primal serpent like force into the world. they refer to it as a god, but it is older and more powerful than the gods of greyhawk. very few people know they are trying to do this; they work in secret and kill non yuan ti agents once they are finished using them.

magic tattoos are incredibly popular. in a world where anything you own could be lost at sea, magic items that can never be lost are very helpful. chaos magic was first seen in the world after the flood, as was elemental magic. the water mages guild is a very powerful guild.

the good dragons are very few in number. the remaining good dragons have banded together and claimed one of the larger islands as theirs. the evil dragons are also few in number, but the remaining ones are monstrously huge and powerful (like dragonlance 5th age).

the lizard men adapted to the change fairly easily once they adjusted to salt water. they are now considered equals with the pc races, and defend the shallow areas of many human settlements from sahaugin and other attackers.

many paladins now have aquatic mounts.

many magic libraries and workshops were lost beneath the sea. the sahaugin have no use for magic, but they understand that the other races could use it against them, so they defend the sunken magic repositories fiercely.

that's what i have so far. i'm looking for critiques, suggestions, and other input. am i overlooking any obvious things? does anything sound unworkable? does anyone have any ideas that sound like they would mesh perfectly with the world so far?

any input is appreciated.

You could have ancient alien gods from the bottom of the ocean resurfacing.
You could do something to reflect that the fact that a fire elementalist would have to be a little insane.

Those are the two things I would do, because that's the kind of thing I like, but otherwise your campaign sounds pretty awesome.

I can picture it now... sea monkeys as far as the eye can see

I would think that several of the gods would really take center stage in this new enviorment.

-Atroa (East wind)
-Beory - would probably still be around as rain is one of her portfolio powers. She would probably lose some power though.
-Fharlanghn - would still have plenty of game.
-Geshtai -(lakes, rivers, wells, and streams) would probably get a promotion! :)
-Osprem -(Sea Voyages, Ships, and sailors) would probably be the (or one of the) top goddess now.
-Phaulkon -(air, wind, clouds, birds, and archery) would probably get a boost as well.
-Procan (stormlord) was an intermediate, probably a greater god now.
-Sotillion (south wind)
-Telchur (north wind)
-Velnius (lesser god of Sky and Weather)
-Wastri would probably be the huge baddie these days (Amphibious god)
-Wenta (west wind)
-Xerbo (the Sea Dragon)

Thats assuming some of these didn't get killed. :)
By the looks of things a couple of these overlappers could stand to get offed! :)
But thats a very cool change of divine scenery and could defintely help fit the aquatic theme of the setting.

You could decree that Mayaheine is the new patron of hte Paladins (and perhaps married a sed god to justify the sea going paladins), since Mayaheine believes in protection first, where as Pelor/Heironious fell headlong into the war and got killed (not without doing their damage naturally to the evil ones).

Some sort of airship/aerial race could use representation as well. Perhaps the gnomes have an air force as well?
A couple of ideas i can think of are
....floating bazaars near the baklunish waters, which anyone can fly/swim/boat out to and walk about on shifting planks and the like.
Another practical change would be that a lot more people would be armor-light, or armor-less. Who wants to drop into the drink and drown. Makes raise dead/ressurection more difficult! :p
Have you given any thought to what happened to the Circle of Eight?

thanks guys. i really like the idea of using ancient alien sea deities. i may even work that into how the world got to be the way it is.

as for flying races, i'm thinking of including the niomus from mythic races. they're your basic flying humanoid, and i have ideas for sprawling cliff face cities. no gnomish air forces, but the elves still use flying mounts, and the niomus, being flying creatures, will be devastating in aerial attacks. massive aerial creatures that feed from the ocean will also be an obstacle for people to deal with.

the floating bazaar is now officially part of the world. good call!

i'm considering using the wheel of time rules for ac rather than the standard dnd ones. heavy armor would almost be a thing of the past, and while lighter armor would solve some problems, using the wot system might be a better option.

thanks so much for the recommendations on gods. i haven't solidified the remaining gods yet, but these look like a good place to start! any links or sources where i could get more info (i'm kinda hazy on details here) on the circle of eight before i decide what to do with them?

Not familiar with that book, but it sounds right to me.

Hmm, i haven't seen that book either. How do they do it?

Hey, no problem.
Well, the LGG doesn't give you much to work with on info for the 8. You might try getting your hands on older (1e/2e) Greyhawk game books. Or novels.

You could try the Greyhawk Webring as well. Its 2e stuff, but that shouldn't matter for getting info on the Cof8.

no, just a lot of work and stuff. plus the iron dm contest, which i failed at miserably! :)

i'll have some more stuff at the end of this weekend, though. quickly though, the way the wheel of time handles damage (if i understand correctly) is that every class gets a defense bonus that goes up with levels, like the bab. you can add this bonus to your armor class or use your armor bonus. only fighter types can stack both. this way classes that traditionally don't wear armor have a shot against those in armor (but high level fighters in plate are almost impossible to hit). also, i think they use a wounds type damage system, but i need to do more research.
