Arabian nights like Arabian nights,More often than not are hotter than hot

Sounds like a common conundrum. You want a NPC to be more than a stock, faceless character, but don't want to overshadow the PCs.

Two that leap to mind are Hermes Trismegistus and Thoth--fwiw, there were some in the ancient Near East who linked the gods Hermes and Thoth for pretty obvious reasons. Do a Google search on them, and you'll see what I mean. Also there were some other deities in both pantheons who acted as "Psychopomps" (an old fashioned word for guide or escort).
