Arcana Unearthed

(snip) I'll say right off that i was quite quick to bad mouth the Diamond Throne setting when it came out. In fact, i sold it off about a week after i got it. I thought it was as boring as it was bland.

That being said, they gave it new life in AE. New maps (expanded) and new setting material, as well as the return of the dragons has made the setting quite spicey!! I'm as impressed with the setting now in AE as i was underwhelmed with it before. (snip)

That's great to hear.

I love Monte's work but was completely underwhelmed by DT, particularly after reading all the Ptolus info and discovering how great a Monte-designed world could be. However, it sounds like AE has made DT that much more interesting. It might be time for me to have another look....

The part that I keep incorporating into other systems is the magic item creation system. Makes much more sense to split form from function.

Yes, much more interesting. The "return of the dragons" gives the setting another source of potential conflict and interest, rather than just the "some don't like giant rule" of the earlier version. The maps have been expanded and the unknown west isn't unknown any longer. There is just a lot more going on in the setting now. The difference is like between night and day. I even like the prestige classes and believe me, thats saying something!

PJ, I didnt like DT's prestige classes either, which is one of the few parts about AU that I didnt love.

If AE's PrC's are that much better ... <sigh> ... looks like another of Monte's books I will have to pick up.

I use AU/AE in conjunction with my D&D material and it works great. I keep the spellcasting systems seperate, though. It's very interesting in almost every regard. I also think the original DT was a bit boring, but AE has really changed a lot of that. It's much more vibrant and interesting now.

Even the support material is top notch. Everything from the Grimiores to Legacy of the Dragons (one of the best bestiaries out there) are great items that not only bring great new monsters, spells, items, and so forth to the system. Good stuff.
