Arcane Mark?

I once used it to secretly mark my group members so I could see, whether it was them or one of those blasted dopplegangers (of course, I made sure it was them before, but you do not always have the time to check carefully). Not too bad for a 0th level spell. ;)

Otherwise it is just as useful as writing your name into a book, so you (and others) know it's yours. :)

Also allows you to "sign" something with your unique signature.

When the party arrived in the city, with their "pet beholderkin" and shield guardian, they were checked in at the doors by a wizard, who, after asking the usual questions and all that, gave them ID papers and "branded" his arcane mark upon both the construct and the aberration.

It's how it's done with that city. Arcane marks are unique to the wizard who cast it (forging marks is very hard), and when seeing a monster (like the above examples, or a druid's dire tiger companion, for example) roaming in the street but with a visible mark on them, people will know said monsters are supposed to behave -- no need to run away screaming for the guard.

If the monster goes on a rampage, witness will be able to describe the mark the monster was carrying, and thus, whose gatemage let it in. The gatemage would be considered responsable for anything that happens, so they're prone to be overzealous in their inspections.

And at least in the FR, if you forge an arcane mark, you get into trouble with the goddess of magic, which is probably more trouble than you'd ever want. ;)

IMC arcane mark can be used to generate any mark or symbol you want. We've used it to mark passageways in a labyrinth; scouts use it to leave notes for trailing party members; rogues use it to highlight trap triggers.

Oh, and one time it came in useful when we were fighting a recurrent villain with very high SR and saves. My sorcerer never did get a single spell to work on her, over a total of about thirty combat rounds. Eventually I realized that the only no-SR, no-save spell on my list was arcane mark, so I waltzed into melee range and wrote "DORK" across her forehead. It had no combat effect, but it made me feel better. :)

Arcane mark is also rather handy as the focus for a scrying spell (your 'signature' being very familiar to you).
Are you referring to the spell Scrying or some other spell? Since a Scrying spell focuses on a particular creature, I'm not sure how arcane mark comes into the picture.

I suppose he is speaking of the "Connection", but that wouldn't work that way.

It means that the caster of Scrying has the "Connection" at hand, not the target. ;)
