Arcane Spell Failure (and reducing it)

Goolpsy - at the same time, wandering around looking like you AREN'T an arcanist can be a distinct advantage, especially if you carry a few weapons too. People will mistake you for a melee type and this can be a huge advantage in many upper-level combats, where spellcasters are targetted by Fort-save attacks, and the melee brutes by Will-save effects.

Plus there's the style issue - I like the look of some amount of armor, breastplates, chain shirts, etc.

Twilight sounds like a good candidate (depending on cost / adjustment).

+1 equivalent

As for the Mage Armour arguments, yes its great, however the concept I was looking for is an armoured Wizard of some nature. I'm not trying to "optimise" the character.

Well, Mage Armor *is* armor.

But, you obviously mean the looks with physical armor worn... that it does not provide, of course. ;)

There's also an armour special ability in the Book of Eldritch Might 2 (iirc... might be 1, but definitely not 3) that completely takes it away. It hink it is a +2 or +3 ability.

Superior Spellcasting. +4 cost.

I'm sure if your DM wants, you can pick up Complete Book of Eldritch Might. It's all three books in one AND has some sweet stuff IMHO for arcane spellcasters, wizards included.

Once again, I don't want the armour for protection. At our current level (8th) most fighting monsters are going to be able to hit me anyway, mage armour or otherwise.

However I like the look of elven chain in the DMG on the female elf. It has a sleek, I'm important look.

As for Books of Eldritch Might ... we have an unwritten "avoid the Mote" rule.

My character is an elf wizard who was not born into nobility but has strived and made his own path in elvish society and has been accepted as Ruathar (Elf Friend) by the nobility. You get a gift from them and the only one that made a big "look at me I'm important" impact was the armour.

My DM agreed to let me take a Mithral Chain Shirt+1 instead of Mithral Chain Mail (this allows me to use my full +5 Dex bonus, has no Armour Check Penalty). I spent money on making it fortified 25% however I may be allowed to change this to Twighlight.

It is all an image thing. In addition I like armour because

1. As mentioned I don't look like a wizard - I wear two Quivers (one at my back, one at the hip) and draw a bow from one of them in combat (of Ehlonna). The bow in question is a Swordbow thus in combat it changes as required. It makes me look like some kind of light-armoured skirmisher / minor noble.

2. Armour can have enhancements placed on it. Being a wizard I can add spells to the armour, make it better, give myself effects (like adding a mage armour effect to it just in case) and so forth.

3. I don't like to play stereotypes. I always do something that changes the concept. The characters favourite spell is Enlarge Person (normal and Mass) which is great in a party that has 3 hand to hand characters (Dervish, Barbarian, Ranger), followed closely by Grease to stop retreating monsters or cover our own retreat. One of these things is spell lists.

image thing...:p

Can't believe you'd avoid the Monte and YET you still want this for an image THING?!!

I don't know personal preference perhaps but I've found a lot of his stuff is too open for abuse/not balanced.

Granted I haven't looked at my books of Eldritch Might since the 3.0 printing, however I do remember a lot of the spells being extremely powerful compared to like-level spells.

Anyway, if I can keep it to WOTC books then it would be much easier anyway. That way everyone has a copy of it.

*Guesses then you've not compared Cross of Lighting (5th level Wiz/Sor) spell to say...Mass Fly or Mass Fire Shield.* Sorrry but while Monte MIGHT increase arcane power slightly, It's no where near as bad as some spells I can think of that ARE from WotC.

In any event you do what you want. I've already handed out my advice.

Actually it was more the Mark spells. I was DMing a campaign and allowed them in. I do like Monte's writing, and so I allowed everything Monte into the game.

The Mark spells were a little overpowered in my opinion and did make sways in the game.

However the spells you cite are indeed unbalanced and I wouldn't go near them anyway for this character. I'm not saying WOTC is perfect, however when you start mixing different philosophies you start getting more than you bargained for.

Example: I take the Marks and Mass Fly and Fireshiedl instead of being limited to one group or another.

Right well as I said, you take what you want from what I've said.

Me, CBoEM was/is a great book and has a lot to offer for those that want cast arcane spells WITHOUT spell failure. Other than that, you're on your own.
