Are companies start to convert their modules to NWN formats?

And will we see companies produce modules done for NWN? I can foresee these 'modules' being exchanged for free with little returns by their makers...

The legality of it may be a question, but I have no doubt we'll soon see user-created versions of all the classic and current D&D modules popping up on the web. Someone already had up a version of the Caves of Chaos from B2 (at least the exterior) up, created with the beta toolset.

I was thinking along the lines of new modules, such as Atlas' Belly of The Beast. I hope so, because it's just too much trouble to assemble a group to play P&P gaming these days.

I started work on the interior, but it was a lot of work for something that likely won't be usable in the released game. I learned some things in the meantime, though.

Someone might do this, though I doubt Atlas will. You can make and share whatever you like, but you can't sell it, so I doubt any d20 compnaies get into it, unless someone working for them is a fan of NWN.

The toolset's not hard to work with, one could do it themselves if inclined. Though, unless you know your way around the NWScript (a C-based language), you might have to make some comprimises. That's not a bad thing though...think of it more as surprises for those players that have played or read the module :)

Not every company will make NWW modules based on their products or even agree them being shared on the Internet.

Below is a post by Clark Peterson of Necromancer Games from the NG messageboards.

As some people are quick to forget it's still a copyright violation even if you give it away free on a website. And if it is D20/OGL you still have to follow the liscense's.

Someone asked me:

"Another question is do we want to let fans create
adventures based on modules? I think that we probably have to have a policy of "Don't tell us anything about it and don't post anything about it on our boards." If we don't know a
fan created something then we don't have to "shut it
down" to protect any IP. I have seen several posts
mentioning making NWN adventures of our modules on our
boards, I honestly don't know if we need to worry
about that or not, I leave that up to the Demon
Overlords."

It does seem that this is a big topic--whether or not people can make NWN modules based on Necro content.

I want to make sure everyone understands my position on this. I hate to be a hard ass, but the law requires that I protect Necro IP. I will do so. I'm not saying this stuff to be a dick. Instead, I am trying to save people a lot of headache. I would hate for a well intentioned fan to spend hours and hours of thier time on a NWN module of Necro stuff and post it all with good intentions only to have me come down hard. So I figured it was only fair for me to make a clear statement of our policy.

So here it is:

People can create stuff for personal use. They use it
at home or with their game group privately. That is
ok.

But if anything ever gets posted anywhere I will take immediate legal action against whoever does it. I will not adopt a cheesy Bill Clinton "dont ask dont tell policy. I will actively look for violations and if I find them I will most likely not even bother with a cease and desist letter. I will file for an immediate temporary injunction and court ordered web site shut down.

We cannot have any distribution of Necro IP. Period. Necro products are in part released under the OGL, but that only allows reuse of Open Game Content under the OGL. NWN--though it may provide you the tools--does not provide the legal right to use Necro content.

That means you may not create and distribute anything containing any Necro IP or anything based on or derived from Necro IP.

And it doesnt matter if the module is for sale or not. You making $ has nothing to do with violating copyright laws. That means I will come down just as hard on the casual fan who posts a NWN module on a fan site for free as I would on the guy who is trying to sell one.

Again, I am not trying to be a big meanie about this. I just hope that by clearly stating our position that people dont inadvertently cause problems for themselves when they didnt mean to.

Again, sorry to be a hard ass.

Clark
