It's more than just "mass", it's also the space the creature takes in combat. A lion or tiger can fight effectivelly (and in fact prefer to fight) in close-quarters, drawing prey to themselves, instead of keeping them at bay.
Rhinos, bulls and moose are examples of Large creatures that prefer to bat their enemies around, instead of pulling them in.And? That description applies to dang near every large creature.
In the case of lions or tigers, large size also helps represent the potential area they threaten - again I point you to how large creatures are handled in 3.5 vs. 3.0.
