Reading the Pathfinder RPG book left me with the impression that it only exists to support Paizos AP material, with most power-spikes flattened out, etc. This aso means that powerfull PKs, or such with strange abilities, as well as powerfull monstrous races are outright discouraged as to make possble player characters more predictable.
Every player/dm that starts convertig some of the old stuff more or less gets punished for it by losing on base class abilities, the same more or less holds true for pathfinderizing old splatbook-classes.
So no, I don´t think PKs are still viable.
