I have not heard of anyone being accused of worshiping Satan because they eat cheese and sweet pickle sandwiches. But nothing would surprise me these days...

The primary similarity is the difficulty of explaining it. However, many things are difficult to explain, but not all that hard to understand.

Seeing is believing. If the general public was exposed to the hobby by the media, they would get used to it and learn to understand it. Hence, a tv show.
