Are Slipcases the new black?

Looking through Game Trader, and notice that the Advanced series from Green Ronin is going to have a slipcase edition coming out in a few months.

And Troll Lords just announced that their latest in the Gary Gygax's series will have an optional slipcase to store the six books.

And WotC have the core slip case and now the Races slip case.

So are slipcases the new black?

It can be a nice way to store books if one doesn't have book selves and things.

How do you mean? I for example, keep my Race collection... well yes, on the book shelf. Is it supposed to go some where else?

No, but with the slip cases it can go else where and stand up unlike most other books by themselves.

A good point, but this minor convenience will not be worth the 40%-60% price hike that publishers are likely to charge for slipcase editions of existant games. Unlike leather binding or foil-stamped covers, a cheap cardboard slipcase isn't a production expense worthy of a price hike like that.

So far I've seen no evidence of this hike

It will come, if history is any indicator. There have been few RPG companies that fail to earmark a relatively inexpensive cosmetic enhancement as constituting a 'special or 'limited' edition worthy of a higher pricetag.

The Races Series from WotC which contains Races of Stone, Races of the Wild and Races of Destiny and is slip-covered retails for $89.95, only 10 cents higher than the books contained within.

Note that I said few RPG companies - there are some exceptions (WotC among them) ;)
