are the D&D Map folios any good?

Vile Darkness
libris mortis
complete adventurer

In that order. All three are good books, but if you are a DM, Vile Darkness will let you throw some nasty stuff at your players, especially if you use devils and/or demons.

I agree with amethal on MMIII for a number of reasons:
  1. It's 3.5
  2. Good Layout. Entries begin at the top of each page.
  3. It does a decent job adding high CR creatures.
  4. It has a short table listing monsters HD, LA, and ECL

MMII, I think, has more monsters. It also has the Gem Dragons and 9 monsters above CR 20.

I actually liked the first two Map Folios, in a kind of "these look cool" way. But if you want to maximize your dollars, get your maps here:

This first link is to a thread on EnWorld for 100 maps by Phineas Crow - there's some really great stuff in there. The second link takes you to Silverthorne Games' website, where Phineas is posting new maps every couple of weeks.

As for your other options, if you want monsters, go with MM3. If you want stuff to flesh out your campaign, consider BoVD or Libris Mortis. Do not under any circumstances get the Epic Level Handbook - when your group reaches epic levels, you'll have more fun if you just make up your own rules. Yes, the book is that bad (IMO).

seems like lots of you like libris mortis :)

i'm sure i could work that into my campaign nice and easily - so far already one of the bbeg's lackeys is a ghost :)

Since when did Wal-Mart start selling D&D stuff? I'll tell you what, send me the gift card and I'll send you the 2 folios + a few random d20 books.

Map folio 3-D

I like this. I built the models in an afternoon and I've used them at multiple game sessions since then. WAY more than worth the $9.95 spent on it. Someone who uses miniatures, even if they don't normally use scenery, would be nuts not to grab up one of these at that price. They are fun!

:)
