Are the Vaati the progenitors of the Modrons?

You know, in the way that they Obyriths predate the Tanari, the Baernaloths spawned the Yugoloth, and the Ancient Baatorians made the... Baatezu.

Are the Vaati the progenitor outsiders for Law?

To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing that even so much as hints at this. It seems more likely that they might be the creators of the inevitables, though.

There's nothing to say the Vaati created the inevitables, but the "Ecology of the Inevitable" article from Dragon #341 implies that something created the creche-cradles that make the inevitables, and the Vaati just seem more likely than the modrons or formians.

And the character Vaati from the Zelda games is similar only in name (and using wind-magic).

Vaat references to the Vaati are there?

Most references I've seen seem a bit skimpy. "The wind Dukes of Aaqa" , the "Rod of Nine Parts", their war against the demons, and their elemental allies/enemies. But what was their culture, appearance, etc?

And are the zenthyri from MM2 their last surviving hybrid descendants? The zenthyri are purple human-like planetouched with a strong Law focus: better candidates than those creatures in Fiend Folio with a hint of clockwork: the mechanatrixes.

The Aphanacts were mentioned as the creators of the Inevitables. The Vaati come from the elemental plane of air, so they aren't likely to be the progenitors of anything on Mechanus.

Not so much. They may have so revered the concept of Law that they created guardians for it.

Or, they may have created them for their own means, and done it in such an iconic way that the Inevitables naturally gravitated to Mechanus.

It's even possible that the Wind Dukes originated one place and moved to the other. It does seem odd that elementals would have been so instrumental in a war against outsiders.

Whichever it is of the Fiendish Codices that summarizes the concepts even seem to hint that the Wind Dukes precede such basic creatures as demons and devils, and even such concepts as good and evil, and hence the Great Wheel as we know it was probably in a much more primitive and primeval state.

I think the idea of the Vaati creating either the inevitables or the modrons certainly could be plausible. Although, honestly, I like the idea of them creating the inevitables more. I'm kinda with Erik Mona's beginning on the April issue of Dragon--they fit in April because while they're not funny per se, they're also not very serious. I mean really; the very idea of the modrons is pretty dang silly, and even the designers who have worked on them and developed them seem to agree with that idea.
