The United Kingom of Britain & Northern Ireland.
3 constituent countries: Enlgand, Wales & Scotland.
1 province: Northern Ireland.
IoM, etc are crown dependencies, IIRC.
Correct. I'm American, but I did my masters in comparative politics & international relations, and yours is my favorite country. (American politics manages to be both extremely bland and blood pressure raising at the same time, IMHO.)
Of course, my adviser in grad school was a Brit who liked British politics, but loved the exotic flavor of US politics.
I had to compile a list of "countries" for a drop down for a land registry system. You'd think that would be straightforward, but no, it depends how you define a country...
I know! I had a similar quest at work. Took me years to convince someone in IT to change a list in our SAP system from Great Britain to United Kingdom (we meant the latter) and from "Serbia & Montenegro" to Serbia (they split up in 2006, I had Montenegro added in 2006, but only got them to change the name and code for Serbia in 2010!). Some folks used to be amused by tossing out random country names and making me "guess" their ISO country codes, until they realized, shockingly, I had them all memorized!
BTW, the politically correct term is "country or region", so you don't need to argue about whether Kosovo, Taiwan, etc. are countries or not.
You forgot the Orkney nation...
Luckily, the Faroe Islands do count as a country for certain purposes, but sadly, no one recognizes the Orkneys . . . one day, I hope free Cornwall and free Greenland will.
