Are there rules for attracting non-humanoids with the Leadership feat?

I have a Druid who I want to give the Leadership feat so he can attract a cohort and followers to inhabit and guard his forest. I'd like them to be natural beings, maybe a treant cohort and animal or plants from the MM as followers. Would it be as simple as determining the ECL for creatures from the Monster Manual to see if they'd qualify as followers or cohorts? Are there any guidelines or recommendations for something like this? Thanks!

Absolutely!

They're just as for regular PCs -- add LA to hit dice to get final ECL.

Some critters are playable only as Cohorts, as indicated on their LA line. For example: Blink Dogs.
