Are we the baddies? Oh.. yeah. Yeah, we're the baddies...

So we are playing a xianxia style rpg and trying to get out of our comfort zone. So we decided to play the villains of the story. Now this does not mean the characters do horrible things for horrible sake. Villains, not psychopath nutters. ;)

This basically means that the setting is made up of mostly "good guys", the world is "mostly at peace", and governments are "mostly honest and altruistic". And the player characters have to think of a evil plot to rise in power. So they have = world conquest.

As such, their world conquest has the side aspect of benefitting their own personal nation, which then reveres them as "heroes" despite the fact that all reasons for war and conquest are lies and propaganda.

The characters have taken over their own kingdom through devious means. And are now looking at their first real conquest = the great Island of Red Tigers! Red Tiger island is huge, and made up of many separate tribes. The players plan on trying to conquer the island and unite the tribes as their shock troops for later wars.

Question =
What are some fun encounters and plots that would be ripe for kung fu villains to be challenged by?

Most of the people on the island are heroic warriors, what are some ways the players can take advantage of that and make it easier for conquest?

any other ideas?

Set up a Kung Fu tournament in a remote location and invite the greatest heroes of Red Tiger Island to enter, with the aim of brainwashing them into being pawns of the PCs and/or getting them to off each other, easily removing the PC's main obstacles to their evil plans.

Don't forget to poison the food of as many of them you think you can get away with, framing the least-liked faction of goodies for the deed. Bonus points if you manage to fake your own death or incapacitation at the same time so no one suspects you.

This is fantastic!

I have even use the poison the food idea as a "driver" to push people in the tournament out of desperation....

Keep these great ideas coming! Woot!

A single single powerful hero or a group. I have had a lot of villainous wuxia campaigns and I'll do things like take take inspiration from the Golden Swallow character in Come Drink with Me, sending a righteous hero outdoor justice against the party. Also good aligned sects, can work together to thwart them.

If you haven't seen them, you might find the movies Killer Constable (which is about a dirty harry like constable who is a bit shady) and Duel for Gold (basically a heist movie about a group of evil characters all trying to outwit each other) useful. Opium and the Kung Fu Master might also be handy. But I would really recommend Heroes Shed No Tears directed by Chor Yuen. There is a character in that who is insidiously evil but exploits other peoples heroics to grow his own power.

An adventuring party of kung fu fighting investigative journalists, who make it their mission to accurately report on any major goings-on on the island. Initially they may be a thorn in the villains' side, threatening to uncover their schemes, but a savvy party could manipulate them into reporting 'truths' that hurt the villains' rivals.

I will check those out for sure, thanks!

Come on folks! Be Evil! ;)

Any other ideas? Does the island location give extra thoughts?

Spread rumours that the nation is under attack from another Kingdom (and do a bit of false flag operations) . Thus a large part of their army will be ocvupied elsewhere. Or a false flag operation that it appears that some of the Heroes have attacked the legitimate rulers and this the army will hunt down and eliminate this interna threat.

In both cases should be lot easier for your troops to go in and take control.

Or get the heros to think that the legitimate rulers are corrupt, and tyranni al. Thus you can get the help of the Heroes to take the throne. You just need to present yourself as just heroes... And then silently afterwards eliminate the threat they pose
