I'm usually the umpire and I usually prefer to be, but I get to sit on the other side of the screen sometimes.

I spend a lot more time trying to design games than I spend either running or playing them.

I nearly always GM.. at least, that's how it's been for 18 or so years (I got into TTRPGs when I was young, almost 30yrs ago). I found that I really only enjoy being a player at in-person games, online games don't hold my attention well enough unless I'm GMing.

I actually just finished my first proper stint as a GM a few weeks ago. There was good and bad aspects to it. We are basically a rollplaying group doing Pathfinder 2e, and hopefully some Starfinder 2e in the future. Honestly I did not love GM prep in Foundry. I think if I were going to do it again I would have to be making my own stuff and maybe interjecting a lot more, you know, actual roleplaying. (This is not a knock on our groups preferred style of play. But I do not think it is necessarily conducive to me wanting to run a game.)

Consider only breaking out the battlemaps when a fight is happening. or maybe dungeon-crawling. Until then, consider using pretty art/scenes (I like jamesrpgart's stuff).

I also feel the need to have battlemaps etc prepped but I find that using scenes that give a rough vibe of the area helps everyone focus more on the moment, not the grid. And it means a little less prep :)

I run for my "default" group always, but I've been lucky that one of my players also runs for his friends, and I'm included in that, and ALSO fell in as a player/GM mix roll for a group my partner became friends with.

When a person or two is going to be out of a future sesion for a group I don't normally GM for, I'll typically volunteer to run a one shot for those that could make it to game night.

I've learned to appreciate being a player more over the last couple of years much more than I did before, though I still favor being a GM more overall.
