Are you an assassin? (character design question)

Have any of you pals o' mine played or been involved in a group containing assassin characters? Im wondering because i am considering taking on the prestige class with my halfling rogue. If you have had experiance, how effective was the character? Was there a problem with infighting? Most importantly, was it fun to play?

The big problem is that the assasin spends lots of time on his own, away from the group. Beyond that, I don't think much of the class -- poisons and Fortitude saves for death attack. Just the thing if you want to kill low CON wizards who somehow have lots of hps.

It's kinda cool to have the spells, but that's pretty high level.

Anyway, as long as it isn't played as a sociopath, he could just be the guy who has a distasteful job. Grosse Point Blank is great source material!

Two out of the five PCs in my game are assassins and even the fighter was offered a position in an assassin guild.

Assassins are like any secret society, they require that their members spend some time away from the party for training, contacts, etc. It has not been much different from the evil wizard apprenticing himself to a more powerful wizard.

Yes it has been fun.

There are also lots of class options and sourcebooks for assassins now.

The only assassin I've played was in a one-shot adventure at a con (Dragonflight '97). It was definitely fun, and a challenge.

Probably the most deciding factor will be how the DM decides to handle your character. If he gives you challenging assignments, even/especially if they are seperate from current party plans, then they can be a blast.

An assassin can be a valuable tool to a campaign party if he's used right and not played as a simple killing machine (unless that's what you want the character to be).

I play a monk/assassin in a Forgotten Realms game. The entire party is either N. LE, NE. It has been a blast. The special skills of a monk added to the skills of an assassin have really rocked. I really like the "study a target for three rounds" then attack if succesful make a save against instant death. :)

Usually I use my skills working with the party but I do take indivual jobs and go off on my own and do things. We do things like this when other players can't make it. We are pretty relaxed bunch while one player is doing his thing the others will read or play video games or just sit and listen to what is happening. We all get a chance to go off and do things when we are in our homes in Waterdeep.
