Are you bothering to read DUNGEON anymore? (and level index)

Are you bothering to read DUNGEON anymore?

I never read Dungeon when it was printed, it's more likely I'll check it out now, when it's electronically available - not just because it was a pain to get it, but because adventures in electronic form are simply more useful than in print form for me.

I'm waiting for them to compile the issue into one PDF.

Holy cripes, you're not kidding. For me to do the "index" of the adventures and actually find out what levels they were for, I had to wait for the zip to download and get extracted and then finding the LEVEL for issue 151, 152 was not easy. That lead me to believe that formatting (which is important for DM's) is not a high priority. I get the impression that they just took some scenarios and crapped them up onto PDF's. Methinks that the "customer service" of getting needs heard by the DM's who 'read' DUNGEON will be like trying to figure out your insurance by calling the 1-800 number and being transferred to a call-center in Waziristan...

I hate reading PDF's on a computer monitor. It's a retarded method even if you flip your monitor vertical. Headache city and not convenient at all..I wonder what the carbon footprint of electronic is to cutting down trees? I'm sure the migraine content will be up.

One PDF. One download. THat's how it should be anyways if this is what we've been lowered to.

jh

I downloaded two or three and skimmed them. I don't like PDF adventures (I bought at least four adventures in PDF form and must print them out if I want to run), in black and white in order to save money, without professional binding... The end result is beyond compare with what I'm getting through my Pathfinder & GameMastery subscriptions.

No PDF for me. Then again, I'm 35. Perhaps I no longer belong to the target audience. That's ok. I'll be playing 3.5 for quite a while I think.

Ditto.

I hope this is not what they intend to charge for anytime soon.

(Although, I guess it really won't affect me either way.)

(snip) 2) Online Dungeon's move to the Dungeon Delve format (or whatever it's called) makes it near useless to me. I dislike the format *that* much - it makes the module seem disjointed and difficult to read, and it seems to promote far more encounters that are simply tactical battle exercises. There are fewer puzzles, and opportunities to use skills creatively, and interesting NPCs, and complex political/social encounters. (snip)

I have a particular hatred for the Dungeon Delve format as well. I mainly read Dungeon for adventure, plot, encounter and site ideas more than looking for complete adventures. The use of this new-ish format seems to take away the bits of fluff that I'm looking for (YMMV).

The Expedition... modules also suffered from this format (although, with the exception of Ravenloft and possibly Greyhawk, they sucked hard anyway).

To me, Dungeon and Dragon have ended publication. It sucks to have something that in one form or another been with me since 1985 gone, but there's nothing I can do about it.

I haven't been reading them either.

Normally I like PDF's. And I like EZines. The fact that Dungeon (and Dragon) are both published in fits and starts rather than a single big monthly PDF is what does me in. The HTML based nature of it also makes it difficult to print off. It's like getting the Newspaper I guess. You can sit down once and get the days news, if you're real hardcore you might even clip some interesting stories or you can log onto the New York Times (or whatevers) website every hour or so to see if anything new is up. I guess it's just a question of motivation. When the magazine shows up. I would sit down and at least skim everything. If stuff popped out at me I'd read it more closely. But with the mags it's tougher to skim. I usually just end up reading links posted by others and stuff like that.

Amen to that! I would love to read them as print mags but those of us outside the US have never had that luxury..
Actually I find that hard to believe. I had no problem at all getting them in Germany (either from FLGS or directly from Paizo).

So even if you have no FLGS around where you live, you could always just subscribe at paizo.com

Frankly, it is not worth reading for me now, for several reasons

1: It is online. I don't generally read pdfs for fun online.
2: It has no adventure path. I never played one through, but I liked the design elements.
3: The adventures have an eulogy feel. WE never had a chance to print this (no one would LET us print this) while the magazine was viable, so let's print all those old ideas we had floating around because it does not matter anymore.

I know that sounds harsh, but I liked Dungeon a lot, and I'm still quite angry how WOTC killed it, and then left it in the ditch to rot.

You summed it up for me quite nicely. I dont read online magazines. And no I'm not printing them out to read either. I generally dont buy PDF's either.
