D&D (2024) Are you going to buy the new 2024 D&D Core Books

Do you plan on getting the new D&D core books in 2024?

No. I said several months ago I wasn’t going to buy the new PHB if they chose not to use the book to introduce mostly new subclasses. Since their choosing to waste the space with unnecessary revisions of existing subclasses, I have no need for the book.
Might want to keep your eyes on the DMG and MM, at least.

I voted for maybe, but the relevant factor for me is not so much reviews, but what else we see in the playtest. There’s still three packets to go on the PHB, and an unknown number to go on the other two core books. I think anyone making up their mind about it now is jumping the gun.
This is my sentiment, also.

I actually wonder if there is a significant number people did that specific 180, or if we're actully seeing different groups speak up.

It makes me think of the complaint I hear "You complained about this, so we changed it, and now you're complaining that we changed it." which usually isn't accurate because it is different people speaking up who have different opinions.

Anyone here actually frustrated that the early playtest was too different from the 2014 rules and is now still frustrated, thinking that the new stuff is little more than errata?
I mean, it probably is different groups of people making those complaints, but that doesn’t really make a difference to my point. The early stages of the playtest were experimental enough that a significant group of people felt it was too drastic a change and would break backwards compatibility. At this stage, the designs are being reigned back in to the point that a significant group of people feel it’s not enough change to be worth all the fanfare. Whether those are different groups of people or not, it still clearly shows that a lot has changed over the course of the playtest so far. There’s still a lot more playtest to go, so a lot more could still change.

If it looks like what we’re currently seeing, I’ll probably get it. I just don’t think we should count on it still looking like what we’re currently seeing when all is said and done. It might, but people have been let down by such assumptions already. So I’m going to stay the “high hopes, no expectations” course until given reason to do otherwise.

Huh? The 2024 rules are still being built on the back of the 2014 rules, which are now Creative Commons. Like 95% of the rules content is sure to be open, and after the tremendous PR disaster of trying to revoke the OGL, it seems unlikely they would risk keeping the remaining 5% closed off.
If I'm wrong about that prediction, I'm much more likely to be wrong about the other one. If they release it under Creative Commons (or the ORC), that's... pretty much a guaranteed buy from me. If they release it under the OGL... I'd have to think about it, long and hard, but that'd go a long way to convincing me that they've truly abandoned the idea of pulling out of open gaming in the timeframe that matters to me.

The only PHB stuff I'm interested in is easily house ruled into current 5E games, so that's a pass. Unless it's on deep discount on Amazon or a gift.

The MM is basically useless to me. I homebrew my own monsters and have stacks of monster books to draw inspiration from, so that's a pass. Unless it's on deep discount on Amazon or a gift.

The DMG is the one I'll actually keep an eye on as the revisions and reorganization there might make it worth checking out, depending on reviews.

PHB is a certainty. DMG depends on how good it is, but from the stated goals, I'm at least interested. MM is a doubtful, unless they do a major overhaul.

No, well I personally generally like the changes over the past half year, the various D&D and other RPG communities have let me to come to the conclusion that it would be "better" for the hobby if D&D was made by "Good" designers but not successful.

I'm leaning towards no. Partly because I don't see why I need new core books if my old ones are still good. And if I need the new core books to stay current, well, don't lie to me by telling me it's not a new edition of the game.

If I'm wrong about that prediction, I'm much more likely to be wrong about the other one. If they release it under Creative Commons (or the ORC), that's... pretty much a guaranteed buy from me. They genuinely couldn’t publish the current playtest as a new edition that isn’t the same game as what’s in CC. Like actually they…wouldn’t even be able to kinda vaguely claim it’s a new product with a new copyright.

I mean I guess they could be lying when they talk about updating the CC SRD with the 2024 revisions to anything that’s in the SRD, which would certainly stop a high percentage of us to refrain from a purchase, but all current signs point to them currying player favor and keeping things relatively open and intact.
