Simply browsing on Amazon recently and I stumbled upon the core set for sale...

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0786934107/sr=8-4/qid=1295070565/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1295070565&sr=8-4&seller=]Amazon.com: Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebook Set (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying, Three Book Slipcased Set) (9780786934102): Jonathan Tweet, Skip Williams, Monte Cook: Books[/ame]

If it changes...it's the slipcase version for the 3 core 3.5 rulebooks. It's being sold as new for $443.99

You say that's reasonable??? For the NORMAL 3 core rulebooks???

To put this in perspective...(and after I post this they'll probably raise the prices through the roof, so you might want to jump fast and pick them up if you're waiting...though perhaps it will have no effect at alll)...

To pick up the 3 core rulebooks...special editions (that means high quality paper, fake leather bindings with imprinted metal that looks REALLY nice, ribbon bookmark, silver gilt edges on the pages...really the works...) is...currently listed...no promises about tomorrow

$125.99 for the PHB

$144.99 for the DMG

and

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Manual-Dungeons-Roleplaying-Rulebook/dp/0786939435/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1295071180&sr=8-3]Amazon.com: Monster Manual: Special Edition (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying, Core Rulebook III) (9780786939435): Skip Williams, Monte Cook, Jonathan Tweet: Books[/ame]

$94.70 for the MM

That's a total of

$126
$145
$95
-------

$366

Or (so sue me...I rounded 2 pennies upwards...okay...really...don't sue me...I did it for simplicity sake...did the math in my head)...it's cheaper to GET A SET OF THE SUPER NICE DELUXE EDITIONS (even if they are MORE money now then what I paid for them originally) then it is for the normal slipcase core set of 3.5 edition.

Am I the only one scratching my head saying...What the heck is going on with that?

I guess if it's still in it's packaging, collectors might go nuts for it.
I'm not a collector.
$450 for books I picked up for $60 (in great condition) seems hilarious to me.

Clearly, the cost to produce those books is at least 90% of that amount. No wonder WotC didn't think maintaining its 3E line in any format was profitable!

/sarcasm

When you see a high price on amazon, that only represents what some speculator thinks they can gouge for the book. Whatever prices you see on amazon represent the price the book has not yet sold for. The speculators just throw those prices out there hoping some sucker buys the item.

The real problem with speculators is they will sometimes try to buy up reasonably priced items to then resell at their own ludicrously inflated prices to try to make the item look more valuable than it is.

Thats BAD-ASS. I didnt know they made those, did they ever make such special editions for 2e or 4e? I think they ought too, would look great at table. The inside looks different? I'd like to see pictures.

That's about as much as a decent used gun costs in these parts...

Just what "parts" do you live in Dandu? Do we really want to know?

Books or the gun...mmmm. The gun is good, the gun shoots death...
Tough call. :hmm:

As far as I know they never made them for 2e. I got the 4e versions, they were called Deluxe...and they sucked for the money they cost. The paper didn't seem higher quality, the cover wasn't even fake or any type of leather, instead it was the type of embossment on a normal cover that you find on certain special Comic book covers. Color me unimpressed.

The content is the same inside as the rest of 3.5 core...with the exception that the erratta of the time is all integrated into the books themselves. So slight differences in text and the reading of certain abilities/spells/etc.

I don't know if they look different inside, but IIRC the text has all the errata incorporated (or what existed at the time of printing). Don't hold me to that, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. I recall some players saying things like, "What, now I have to rebuy the books just to get the errata?!??!" You know, the usual complaints about any new printing.
