Argghh D&D is boring me

Dagger75

Epic Commoner
My group has been playing 3ed since Sept of 2000 when the game came out almost every week. I have DMed for all but 2 months and lately I am bored. I have a player that is willing to DM a Kingdom of Kalamar game, but I don't want to play a fantasy setting. Half my group will probably be P.Oed with wanting to switch games but I want to switch Genres. I want something other than fantasy.

I know I can just come out say we are switching games, take it or leave it and let the players who want to stay, stay.

Anybody else ever have this happen to them? How did the group take it?

Thanks for listening.

Our game lasted about a year and a quarter before major burnout happened.

Well, the group splintered, with myself and most of the remnants trying everything from variant D20 (Fading Suns) to new systems (Mage, Gurps, Champions).

In all honesty, nothing has been as fun as 3e. I don;t know why, but that's just the case. I really miss kicking down doors and whacking off orc heads.

Maybe the grass *is* always greener...

I doubt this helped much, but it's the truth.

ps. I plan on running a new 3e game this August---keeping my fingers crossed!

You're suffering from DM burnout, it sounds like. Best thing to cure that is some time off. Try Spycraft for a change, or let one of your players try and wow you with Kalamar.

Or try something other than RPGing, entirely. After a while, you'll be itching to return, but variety is the spice of life.

BUT, if your players don't feel the same way, don't just give them a 'love it or leave it' decision. Try discussing it with them, first. Everyone will be much happier, I assure you.

Well, a long time ago (we are talking 1e/early 2e) we had a DM who had a fantasy ringworld. His game was an absolute hoot to play in.

One day he decided to crash his world into a sun and move on due to a growing disdain for *D&D. And no, those of us who still liked the campaign were not happy. It was ultimately his choice, and we moved on, but we were not happy.

I still miss that campaign.

Try some Shadowrun. It's better then D&D, although its rules system isn't.

Yeah! Last time I played Shadowrun was when I got a little burned out with 2ed. It rocked.

We played one session. But then the DM moved away without telling anybody...

Now that the Galaxy Guide is out, perhaps a romp in the Dragonstar universe is enogh of a departure for you to try. I would also tend to agree with the DM burnout observations above. Take a step back and let someone else take the reigns for a bit and then see if your attitude changes.

I'm doing Star Wars!

I have been running D&D3 campaigns since slightly before D&D3's official release, and I finally got my mind set on Star Wars.

Except I'm doing it Wu-Xia Fantasy style, set 1000 years before the Phantom Menace. With the addition of the Psionics Handbook for additional alien psions that aren't related to the force and things like Sith Heretics.

To tell you the truth my D&D3 campaigns have drifted towards Star Wars type stuff over the last month or so anyhow.

Anhow- I wrote up a bunch of material and posted it: have a look!

Introducing- Future Legend.

My group loves to eperiment with new (and old systems)...

If you wnat to keep it a D20 game, then something like Star Wars or CoC or even DragonStar would be quite a change of pace, and some of the D20 games in Polyhedron would be great..The Pulp game should be a good one (the name escapes me at the moment)...Pulp games are always alot of fun...

But we really like to try new and different systems, so I run failry short campaigns with lots of action (though not neccessarily alot of combat)....D20 is cool, but there are ALOT of good games out there...learning a new system can be a pain, but at the same time it's a good energizer and can really get everyone excited, since everything is new and fresh.

We were initially very dissapointed with 3E, so we tried a few of quick one-off games with different systems 'till we decided on Exalted....it was our first experience with a WW game, and I downplayed the Anime feel, and ran it like a Runequest/Glorantha game "on steroids"...we had a blast...

After that wound up..we wanted something different than Fantasy as well...So after some discussion and myself purchasing some different systems we went w/ a West End Games D6 Star Wars game set in the prequel era...We have about 2-3 more sessions before it's wrapped up..my players have since expressed an interest in trying another 3E game, but we are also looking hard at Earthdawn, and Lejendary Adventures...

Sometimes a unique fantasy world or game such as Earthdawn, Exalted, Tekumel or Glorantha is more than enough to get people charged up again...My players are unfamiiliar with Earthdawn (and I only know the basics from when I owned the book a few years back), but the setting is very intriguing to them as it's both familiar and fresh at the same time...In fact they were pretty much sold on LA till I explained my interest in buying some Earthdawn materials, and gave them a bit of a primer..

Although you should dicuss and all come to some sort of an agreement, dragging on through a game you are bored with is no fun, and should be avoided.

Why play if it isn't fun?

I think you need some time off Dagger. Try reading a book, or doing some thing else OTHER than playing D&D. There's plenty of other stuff to try BESIDES RPG stuff to have fun.
