Armageddon 2089 Mech Combat question

Razuur

First Post
Just a quick question that I didn't see here.

In another thread you mentioned that the mech combat in 2089 was another can of worms. What did you mean by that?

Is mech combat going to be real reliant on minatures and battlemats and stuff like that? Is it going to be a miniature game in feel or more cinematic in feel.

The reason I ask is that I am this close to ordering it, but my group does not, will not, and has never like to use Miniatures. for us, combat is total cinematic (with the occasional white board for really complicated things, but only as a map). It would likely be a deal breaker, unfortunately. i am really hoping that it is playable as cinematic. If I wanted a minature game I would play Battletech or something. We want to roleplay!

What kind of combat can we expect in this game? (aside from furious!)

BTW, congradulations on B5 and Conan. Those are on my must by list.

BTW2: those 2089 pdfs look great

Thanks,

Razuur

re: Armageddon 2089

Hi Razuur

Miniatures aren't essential for Armageddon 2089 battles. They can help, with say a particularly large battle between a dozen WarMeks per side but using a whiteboard and good descriptions and grasp of the situation could manage the same.

As for the combat - it's more tactical than just charging at the opposition, particularly with the faster scout WarMeks or with the addition of things like howitzers and missiles that can be fired at an opponent out of visible range.

Hope that answers your questions and thanks for the congrats.

Is there any chance we can see a preview of your Mech Combat rule-play?

Is it going to be grid-based (square)?

Will you include stand-up figures a la BattleTech (except with your own artwork)?

Will we be able to play combined arms units in Mecha Combat (infantry, armor, mech, artillery, air support, etc.)?

1. _If_ you use miniatures, it is grid-based.

2. No stand up figures with the main rulebook but there is an outside chance of miniatures coming - stay tuned. . .

3. Combined arms. . . heh! You have no idea :) Yes, there is a _huge_ opportunity for combined arms, from infantry, right up to satellite. . .

Well, I'm a cheap SOB all my life, so I'd be happy if you provide standup figures with plastic clip-on bases.

Sweet!

Oh, yeah, I have two more questions: Will we be able to play/create transformable mechas? Will we be able to play/create Mecha-joined bigbots?

Skeptical

When you say you can play without miniatures, is that in the same sense that you can play D&D3E without miniatures? I mean, in other words, sure, you can, but the game system is designed to really be played with some sort of tactical combat reference (miniatures, tokens, counter, pennies...)?

I really like the whole mecha and giant robot genre, but for it to work in D20, I can't see it being done without detailed tactical combat. And like someone else said, I can dig out Battletech for that.

I agree on stand-up figures or counters - that would be really nice cause it adds to the visual flavour ;) (and I don't have money for (so many) minis)

You can dig out BOTH BattleTech tactical boardgame and MechWarrior RPG to have a good role-playing session, provided you can muddle through the 3rd Edition of the RPG.

But I do want a d20 version of a BT/MW clone.

I'm not big on the system, unless it changed a lot from teh 1st edition, which I don't think it did enough for my tastes.

Yeah, I'd like to see that too, but... it has to be brilliant right off the bat. I've spent too much money on rpg material that didn't hold up for one reason or the other, and now I'm picky as hell. I'm thinking MAYBE D20 mecha will hit the spot, but I'm still wary.
